SCHOOL BULLYING

Abstract School bullying can occur at any school; these students can be bully by one individual or by a group of students for years. This bullying can take place in primary, secondary, boarding school and private schools. Most students sometime are the bully or being target to be bullied. Most students dislike the bullies and are really afraid of them. In this paper my goal is to bring forth an effort to try to use an interdisciplinary approach to pinpoint why people result to bullying. Where there would be different discipline coming together to solve a problem or prove a point. The disciplines I will be using will be education, psychology, and sociology. So the bottom line is you have to intermingle all of these disciplines to find a solution to one problem. Each discipline will address the situation from a different point of view.

SCHOOL BULLYING

History of bullying

The History of bullying in schools has been a great issues for year in our society and it goes far back as the 18th century. Bullying at one time or another was consider only physical and verbal abuse. In today society bullying is very serious and it has become very violet in the beahaviors of those that are bullying. The term bullying was not openly recognized until the newspaper wrote articles concerning this. In 1862, after almost seventy two years of publications the daily newspaper, The Times wrote their first story on bullying when they reported a soilder allegedly died to bullying(Koo, 2007, pg109). According to Koo(2007) any type of agresssive behavior was simply seen as mischief and a normal part of childhood. Koo(2007) states that bullying was also thought of as innocent misadventure or misbehavior among schoolboys(pg 210). Historically, the most significant turning point for bullying took place in the mid 1970s. Dan Olweus, a research professor of psychology, was the first to conduct an intensive study on bullying among students using his own systematic research methods (Voo, 2007, pg112). He created the Owens Bullying Prevention Program (OBPP), which had significant results in reducing school bullying because of its awareness. In this day and time bullying has reach its peaks, because of the 1999 incident at Columbine High School, bullying as became a major issue. There are so many types of bullying such as cyber bullying. Cyber bullying is one of the crucial bullying using social network, cell phones and internet.

SCHOOL BULLYING

Bullying requires an interdisciplinary approach because the root of why people bully crosses several different disciplines because there are multiple. The disciplines I will be using are Education, Psychology, and Sociology

Education is a discipline and can be applyied to bullying, many educators feels bulying is one of greatess negative impact on the education and academic acheavment for students. When this happems is hurts test scores and impacts a child ability to learn. (Hoffman, 1996) In more severe cases, it can forever alter a student trajectory for success, causing an otherwise gifted student to avoid college or drop out of school altogether. For example, one survey found that 40% of adults who had been bullied in school said that the bullying had altered their plans for continuing education. (Kidscape, 1999, pg 2) Psychology is a discipline and can be applied to bullying, many psychology feels, bullying at school is an aged-old problem and until recently many tool the children will be children attitude toward the problem.(Dan Olweus, phD) In his book, Bullyin at school: What we know and what we can do. Dr. Olweus identifies characteristics of students who are most likely to be bullies and those that mose likely to be victim of bullying. The bullies has strong needs to donminate and subdue other students and get their own way. The victims are typically passive or submissive, according to Olweus research, generally have some of the following characteristics. Sociology is a discipline and can be applied to bullyi, Sociolgy approach towards bullying says 1 in every 4 children are being bullied. 1 out of 5 admit to bullying someone, every 7 minutes, a child is bullied on a playground. (Becca Bownen, Travis Tucker. Ashton Dillion). Society is affected by bullying at a high rate, we see two main types of individuals, the

victim and the victimizers. When society looks at bullying they do not just see the bullies and the victim but how it approaches the school system, the prison systems, societal laws, jobs its provides and the moral vaues a society associates with bullying.

Conclusion

When using interdisplinary studies approach to bullying it must be a combination of disciplins so that the problem can be address in a sincere manner.

Schools and community must understand what bullying really is. Teach parents, teachers, students what the meaning of bullying. (1) Bullying is not the same as being just mean, (2) It should not be a desire to just hurt someone, (3) A list of behaviors and action of the student bullying. Making a Plan to prevent bullying. Help Parents and Teachers and Students form a plan of action, discuss what has been found out about bullying, have students do questionnaire about bullying, provide material such as article and video to parents, teacher and students, build a task force in schools and community, and start an Anti-Bullying Policy. The schools should be more concern about students that are bullying other students and more parents need to get involve with schools. The schools should have a month they set aside for Antibullying, where the students wear tee shirts and put up signs and flyers, in doing this, this would show the bully that you are not going to have this at your schools. The goal is to bring forth an effort to try and prevent bullying.
