Since society has been tailored to suit modern times, the traditional concept of family has been undergoing

a profound transformation. To understand this phenomenon, we should consider such triggering factors as the change of womens and mens roles in society and the boom of technology. How have these affected the society in which we live today?

Both World Wars were the wellspring of the modern woman. When men were sent off to war, women were obliged to replace them at work. Only by learning how to drive, keep the books, and run businesses did women realise that they could provide for their children. From that moment on, something changed. Women felt that they could stand on their own, even after men returned from war claiming their former positions at work. This led to the role women play today.

Inevitably, the mens role was affected as well. Nowadays, the breadwinner-husband and the stay-at-home-wife stereotypes no longer exist. Such roles have been switched. Since men felt that women began to take control of the economy of the family, they have started to assume more responsibilities at home for fear of being eclipsed.

Indeed, they discovered that they, too, could do the household chores, run errands and play a more active role in child-rearing.

Moreover, over the last decades, the proliferation of technology has been jeopardizing the family. Children spend most of their time in front of a screen which prevents them from sharing some quality time with their parents. Even though parents acknowledge how useful technological advances can be, they also claim that young people are overusing them. As a consequence, teenagers isolate themselves from the rest of the family and do not care to foster the bond shared with them.

In conclusion, since society evolved, each member of the family had no other option but to adapt to the changes, which were not just the technological advances, but also the transformations within human relations. Therefore, the concept of family has experienced a major transformation resulting from the social changes of the last century.
