CE 442 Assignment 5

Due 2/23/2006 Thursday 11:00 am.

PROBLEMS 5.1, 5.2, 5.3

All problems are to be done according to the AISC 2005 Specifications. Values of yield stress FY and tensile strength Fu are available in AISC Manual p. 2-39. For typical W and similarly shaped built-up sections the x axis of section is the strong axis that is perpendicular to the web and the y axis is the weak axis that is parallel to the web. See the drawings of W Shapes in Section 1 of the AISC Manual. 5.1 A W16x89 with Fy=60 ksi is used as a compression member. The effective length with respect to xaxis buckling is (KL)x= 25 ft and the effective length with respect to y-axis buckling is (KL)y=12 ft. Compute the nominal compressive strength Pn. 5.2 Compute the maximum service axial compression load permitted on the built-up cross-section shown in the figure. The load is 30% dead load and 70% live load. The steel used is A572 Grade 50, and the effective lengths are (KL)y=14 ft and (KL)x=42 ft. Use LRFD.

5.3 Select the lightest W section to carry an axial compressive load comprised of 20 k DL and 80 k LL. Use LRFD. The member is 14 ft long and is part of a braced frame. Assume the member is pinned at top and bottom (i.e. KLx=KLy=14ft). Use A36 steel. Hint: Begin your design search assuming a failure stress Fcr significantly lower than 36 ksi and since KLx=KLy, look for sections for which rx/ry is as small as possible.
