TotheSeniorJournalismPortfolioReviewBoard: WhenAmberAmayaandIfirstmettodiscussamentorshipandsherealizedthatIamalmost twoyearsolderthanher,shepaused,consideringhowshecouldteachme. Theanswertothatqueryseemedobvioustome.Shewasajuniorworkingasaninternforthe OCRegisteratthetimeandIwasafreshmanjuststartingoutasthenewsapprenticeforthe Chimes.Shecarriedherselfwithconfidenceandmaturityandspokepassionatelyabout journalismherexperiencewiththeChimesandtheRegister,herloveforreporting,anda desiretohelpothersexcelasshehad. Throughthecourseofthesemester,AmberandImetregularlytodiscussthestoriesIwrotefor theChimes,specificallynews.Shehelpedmecrafttighter,moreinterestingledes,organizea betternutgraph,andgavemetipsoncommunicatingwithsources.Shechallengedmetothink aboutstoriesinmultiplewaysandgaveadviceasInavigatedabusysemester. Asthesemestercontinued,wediscussededitingandmanagingthenewssection,whichhelped meshapethetypeofeditorIwantedtobecome.Wediscussedmyideasforthesectionandshe gavemefeedbackonwhatshehadseensucceedandfailduringhertimeaswell.

OurformalmentorshipendedwiththesemesterasIcelebratedmynewpositionasnewseditor attheChimes,agoalreachedasaresultofherguidance.HoweverthroughthatexperienceI gainedacolleagueinAmber.Shestillcheersmeon,encouragesmetostriveformore,andis currentlythepresidentoftheSCJchapteratBiolathatIjoinedwithherencouragement.Sheis graciousandreadytohelpwhenshecan. IseeastrongleaderinAmber.SheperformseveryroleIhaveseeninherwithintegrityand passion.
