Air is made up of 74% Nitrogen, 23% Oxygen, 1% water vapor and about 2% other gases.

Air is a solution, meaning all of its gases are evenly mixed. To understand how air behaves, we must understand how gases behave.

The kinetic theory has 5 main parts:

1. All matter is made of particles. 2. The particles move in constant, random, straight-line motion. 3. All collisions are completely elastic.

The kinetic theory has 5 main parts:

4. There are no attractive nor repulsive forces between the particles. 5. The kinetic energy of the particles can be found using the following equation: KE = mv2 KE- kinetic energy m- mass v- velocity

A. Expansion- gases can expand to many times their original volumes

B. Fluidity- gases can flow very easily.

C. Volume gases have indefinite volume

Volume of gas is volume of container

D. Shape gases have indefinite shape

or or

or Gases take the shape of their container

E. Density gases have very low densities ( O2 = 0.001429g/ml, while H2O = 1.00g/ml)

F. Compressibility- gases can be squeezed together

Before

After

G. Diffusion spontaneous mixing of particles of two substances because of their random motion.

H. Effusion - process by which gas particles under pressure pass through a small opening.

Bell ringer
What happens when we increase the pressure on a gas?

Boyles Law
Developed by Robert Boyle Relates pressure and volume As the pressure on a gas increases, the volume decreases (inverses). P1V1 = P2V2
