Shape Me Up

Overview: The children will have a sheet of paper with shapes on it, and the children will use the shape manipulatives to fill in the shapes on the paper. The children will come up with multiple shapes that will fit into the bigger one on their sheet. Then we will identify and share about the shapes that the children used.

Mathematical Goals: The students will learn different names of shapes. The students will learn how smaller shapes can be put together to create larger ones.

Common Core Standards: For Kindergarten:

CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.A.2 Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. CCSS.Math.Content.K.G.B.6 Compose simple shapes to form larger shapes. For example, Can you join these two triangles with full sides touching to make a rectangle?

For First Grade: CCSS.Math.Content.1.G.A.1 Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining attributes. CCSS.Math.Content.1.G.A.2 Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes from the composite shape.1

Childrens Needs: For English Language Learners: o The instructions will be expressed in both Spanish and English. A model will be provided too to help the children understand what the activity is. o Say the shapes in Spanish and English. For Children with Disabilities:

The children can verbally express the answers instead of moving the manipulatives.

Materials: Shape Manipulatives Paper for the children to put the shapes on

Procedure: Before
o

Take time to go over the different shapes with students. Teacher: What shape is this one? Students: Triangle, square, hexagon, diamonds Teacher: Lets look at the triangle, how many sides does the triangle have? (Will go through all the shapes) Students: three Let the students play around with the shapes for a 2-3 minutes and build things. Teacher will model a structure for students. Students will be given a sheet of paper with an image on it. They will be told to use the different shape manipulatives on the table to fill in the picture. Teacher: What shapes are you using to make the bigger shapes on this sheet? Student: triangles, squares, trapezoid Teacher: How many triangles did you use? How many trapezoids? How many squares ? Students: Umm.6, 2, 5. We will discuss what shapes the children used for the different images. Teacher: What shapes can we put together to make this hexagon? Student: six triangles, two trapezoids Teacher: Why did you use six triangles? Why did you use two trapezoids?

Assessments: Observe: While children are working, teacher will look to see who is copy what the other students are doing and who is trying to manipulate the shapes to fit. Ask: o Teacher: What shapes can we put together to make this hexagon? Student: six triangles, two trapezoids o Teacher: How did you know to use three triangles to make the trapezoid?

Student: I move the shapes around to make them fit.
