Short Answer Questions Choose only 5 of the 7 questions, they are worth 6 marks each, write your answers on the lined paper provided. 1. A group of students carried out a lab similar to the one you did in class to find the empirical formula of magnesium oxide. They found the mass of a clean dry crucible and lid. They added some calcium metal to the crucible and found the mass again. They then heated the whole thing to form calcium oxide. After cooling, the mass of the crucible, lid and calcium oxide was determined. The following data was collected: Material crucible and lid crucible, lid and calcium before heating crucible, lid and contents after heating Mass 42.66 g 62.62 g 70.70 g

Calculate the empirical formula of the compound formed.

3. Phosphoric acid (H3PO4) is made in industry by reacting sulphuric acid with mineral phosphates. For example, 5 H2SO4 + Ca5(PO4)3F + 10 H2O HF + 3 H3PO4 + 5 CaSO4 . 2H2O If 300 g of H2SO4 and 300 g of Ca5(PO4)3F are reacted in an excess of water what mass of phosphoric acid can be produced? If 140.0 g of phosphoric acid are actually produced what is the percent yield?

4. In this unit you carried out a lab where you reacted a known amount of CuCl2 . 2H2O with an excess of aluminium. You observed the actual amount of copper produced in this reaction and you calculated the mass of copper which could theoretically be produced from the known amount of CuCl2 . 2H2O. Using these values you calculated the percent yield of copper. Many groups found their percent yield to be greater than 100 %. Give at least two reasons (specific to this lab and reaction) why this might have happened. Explain your reasons.
