Gardner English 10, 0 Period 30 November 2013 The View of Native American Novelist Burn, Stephan. "The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven." Bloom's Literature. Facts On File, Inc. Web. 1 Dec. 2013. Sherman Alexie, a world class writer, wrote the book The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven as a combination of 22 individual Native American stories. Sherman was given many awards for this book, but was also criticized greatly for it. This book deals with the everyday lives of Native Americans and different views of life between races in an Indian society. The article by Stephen Burn criticizes the power of storytelling in the life of Sherman Alexie, but only because it appears so often in the life of this writer. The use of storytelling is abundant in the works of Sherman, but is used with such deeper meaning that it is hard to recognize. The storytelling brings significance to each new event, but the article presents continuous examples of where these stories could have been replaced in order to create a more diverse writing genre.

Coulombe, Joseph L. "The Approximate Size of His Favorite Humor: Sherman Alexie's Comic Connections and Disconnections in The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven." Bloom's Literature. Facts On File, Inc. Web. 1 Dec. 2013.

The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven was written by Sherman Alexie and has been read by people all around the world. This book of 22 different stories includes many separate characters, but all have similar problems. Many of Sherman Alexies books include Native Americans in them and have many characters with similar backgrounds. This repeated action has become art of Shermans well know personality and views on society. The article by Joseph Coulombre produces a point of conspiracy as he criticizes the views of Sherman Alexie as he investigates the texts of The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven. Joseph realizes that there is a consistent view on society and racial discrepancies hidden I the texts of this novel, but Joseph only passes on this idea and doesnt go into whether he agrees with this view or disagrees. The criticism is more on whether Alexie should have hid these views so well, but this adds no clarity to the mind of the reader on the book. Drucker, Aaron. "Tradition in the Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven." Bloom's Literature. Facts On File, Inc. Web. 1 Dec. 2013. It is a well-known fact that Native Americans are connected with their communitys traditions which is restated in the article. In Native American societies, it is a common for there to be continuous traditions among communities which creates strong bonds between these families. The traditions among these tightly knit communities allows for these families to grow closer than any other society. Native American traditions bring the families of this heritage together and help to destroy inner community problems. The traditions within the Native American communities create tightly knit communities, but these traditions can become horrible contracts for younger generations to follow. This article references how the past traditions of Native Americans have begun to diminish, and are replaced with traditions that cause more harm than good. The present traditions cause hurt instead of these actions connecting the families of the communities, but most of all these new traditions have cause for new problems to rise in the Native American communities. In order for

present and future problems to diminish in the Native American society, the communities of this heritage must look into the past and find their original traditions of peace and happiness.

Martn-Junquera, Imelda. "Alcoholism and American Indian literature." Bloom's Literature. Facts On File, Inc. Web. 17 Nov. 2013. For the Native Americans, the introduction of alcohol has brought horrible consequences. Many families and communities for the Indians have been destroyed by the use of alcohol. By having child abuse and more unemployment added to the Indians lives, the rate of emotional pain and family destruction increase because of these factors of drinking. Many groups have been made to help people with their drinking problems and communities have grown closer because of this. Our society and communities believe that our lives are destroyed by alcohol, but society truly corrupts our communities and futures. If society wouldnt push us to extreme sadness and mourning, our lives wouldnt been burdened with alcohol because we would have nothing to hide. If we chose to not allow society to burden us with social acceptance then alcohol wouldnt be a problem for our society any longer. Our society has let alcohol manipulate our lives and lead our futures to displacement, poverty, disease, and loss of culture. The destiny of our species is in turmoil because of this sadistic drug, but fear and depression will only find another way to control our lives.
