wall of a house. The base of the ladder is being pulled away from the wall at a rate of 2 ft/sec. How fast if the top of the ladder moving down the wall when its base is 7 ft from the wall?

When x=7 You can solve for y by using Pythagoreans Theorem. a2+ b2= c2 x2+ y2= s2 72+ y2= 252 y2= 576 y= 24 Take the derivative of the equation given by Pythagoreans Theorem when s=5 to find the rate at which the ladder is being pulled away. x2+ y2= 252 2x dx/dt+ 2y dy/dt= 0 Plug in all values that you have just solved for and solve for the missing value, dy/dt.

2(7)(2)+ 2(24) dy/dt= 0 28+ 48 dy/dt= 0 48 dy/dt= -28 dy/dt= -7/12 is the rate at which the ladder is being pulled away when x=7

Page 159 #59 Acceleration: The velocity of an object in meters per second is v(t)= 36-t2, 0 t 6. Find the velocity and acceleration of the object when t=4.

To find velocity, plug in t=4 to the given equation. V(t)= 36 t2 = 36 (4)2 = 36 16 = 20 m/sec To find acceleration, take the derivative of the given function then plug in t=4. V(t)= -2t = -2(4) = -8 m/sec2

Page 159 # 42 Find the derivative of the function.

To take a derivative of a function, remove any number that does not contain a variable since the derivative of any constant is zero. Then bring the remaining variables exponents down and multiply it by the coefficient of that variable. Now subtract one from all of the exponents.

f(x)= (x3+7x) (x+ 3) f(x)= (x3+7x) (x+3) + (x+3) (x3+7x) f(x)= 3x2+7 (x+3) + 1 (x3+7x) = 3x3+ 9x2+7x+21+x3+7x = 4x3+9x2+14x+21

Use Product Rule. The derivative of the first times the second plus the derivative of the second times the first. Distribute. Collect like terms.
