Reflection Activity Information Sheet

(Complete a sheet for each activity)

Name of Activity: Old Masters Central Committee Directing Co-Chair Leadership Skills and Attributes Goal For This Activity: Promote diversity in program objectives, events, and participants Briefly summarize the activity: I oversaw the planning committee of twelve, as well as the complete membership of over eighty, as we prepared for the three day program that took place in Fall 2012 for prestigious Purdue alumni. What new knowledge or ideas did you learn by being involved in this activity? I learned the importance of creating a sense of diversity and inclusion in an organization and the strength it can bring. Not only does it stretch each individual member out of their comfort zone, but it allows for collaboration and brings great perspective and ideas together. What knowledge or ideas about your leadership skills and attributes did you learn from this activity? I realized that I am able to lead a group of people who are much different from myself. I found that I have a knack for being able to serve as a mediator when ideas are tossed around in order to come up with the best possible solution. I found myself having the ability to connect with a lot of people in the organization because I communicated in advance how I appreciated and respected each persons ability to bring something to the table. How did the activity impact the community? (Answer if applicable) We were able to put on an Old Masters program that reflected the diversity of Purdue, its alumni, and current students for the entire community to appreciate.

How did your involvement in the activity impact you (on a personal level)? I not only made some great friends, but I networked with a wide variety of people who taught me a lot about myself. Growing up in a rural area didnt provide me many experiences outside of my comfort zone. This was one of many examples at Purdue where I was forced to grow as a person because of new situations.

Why does this learning matter, or why is it important? Diversity is a huge piece of coming to a great school like Purdue. I get the chance to interact with people of different majors, backgrounds, ethnicities, etc. Furthermore, the work force that I go into is full of different people with different perspectives. The best way to contribute in my future career will be to respect and appreciate each of those people and the value they bring to my team or organization. In what ways will you use what you have learned from this activity? I will go forward from this experience definitely with a greater appreciation that diversity can bring to an organization and I will strive to make it more of a reality in my future endeavors. I think more important than that however will be the great value I place on inclusion. I found that usually there is diversity in many aspects of my life but it isnt always sought to include that diversity in different ways.
