1. Recognise the compass directions (Activity1) The students will need to read through the pre reading material on the website. They should then follow on with Activity 1. The first activity is base level and some students may finish early they can start watching the Youtube clip. 2. Identify the parts of a compass (Activity2) Students will work through the compass crusaders website. It is important that the students read all of the material and watch the Youtube clip before moving to the activity. 3. Complete the navigation quiz (Activity3) When the students have completed activity one and two and have done all of the pre reading and you tube clips they can move onto the quiz. Students need to submit their work online using the links. Early Finishers: Watch the 2 Youtube videos provided 1. Identify different types of maps and their uses (Activity1) Before we start the online component show the students different types of maps. (Students should know how to get into compass crusaders but allow time for this). Search for more maps online and identify what type of map they are and their uses, then create mind maps in Bubbl.us in pairs to share with the class. (Follow the link from Compass Crusaders). 2. Interpret a map (Activity2) Set the task of reading through the briefing material, and then they can move to activity 2 the online game to help students understand what maps represent and important parts of a map. 3. Outline the key components of a map (Activity3) Students will start by reading through the material on Compass Crusaders then they will move on to activity 3, a map labelling activity (Padlet) to understand the features of a map. Activities are then to be completed by the class on each major component of the map- grid references, latitude & longitude, scale and symbols & keys.

1. Explain how to use a compass (Activity1) Follow through the online reading and Youtube clip. Students will then complete the compass activity in pairs. (This is base level but needs to be done before they can work on taking a bearing.) 2. Demonstrate how to take a bearing (Activity2) The students need to complete the online component then follow through with attempting to use a compass to take a bearing. (Each student will need to demonstrate that they can accomplish this task). 3. Recognize the importance of pacing (Activity3) Complete activity 3 online and then do the pacing activity. Use the iPads in groups, students are required to check pacing using pacing software. (check students have appropriate footwear for this activity) 1. Identify the key components of a good route plan Read the pre work text on compass crusaders. Work through the route planning activity. 2. Demonstrate the skills involved in completing a route plan Set students the task of building their own route plan for the trip they will be embarking on later in the year. This will be a group activity. First they need to get together and discuss the route on the map. Then they will need to enter their information into the route plan sheet on GoogleDocs. The route plans will be finished off and submitted for marking (They need to be given a start point and a finish point on the map). This activity is a higher level skill and not all students will do well be prepared for quick finishers and some that will not finish. The activity can be finished at home for home work. 3.
