Materials & Resources: Packages of Smarties Simulation Roles sheet Simulation tax cards sheet Container to collect Smarties Container/Baggy for tax cards

Objective: Today, the goal is for students to gain a deeper understanding of how the colonists felt about taxation without representation; and show their reasons for going to war with Great Britain. Input/Connection: Students should have prior knowledge of disagreements between colonists and Great Britain (recall information from Lesson 1). Students should be able to make connections-to-self on how they feel when they have disagreements with their parents (someone in higher authority). Procedures Review: Prior to the lesson, the teacher will review Wednesday nights homework with the students (Read pages 122 and 123; answer questions on page 123). Preview: The teacher will ask the students: How do you feel and what do you do when you have a disagreement with your parents (higher authority)? We can discuss problem solving and steps you take to resolve an issue. Discuss: The teacher and students can discuss the different perspectives on taxation (Parliament versus colonists). Talk about how Parliament believed they should tax the colonies, but the colonies felt that they shouldnt be taxed because they werent represented in Parliament. Activity: (Simulation activity from the blog, Fit to be Fourth) Todays activity will be a simulation. Students will participate in a simulation so they will understand how the American colonists felt when they were being taxed by the British.

Note: For this activity, the teacher will make behavioral expectations clear. Explain that this will be a fun activity, but if students cannot handle it, they will not be able to participate. - Student roles will consist of one king/queen, two members of Parliament, two tax collectors, and the rest of the students will be a colonist. - Rather than having students pick their role from a hat, I will pass out the roles. - Each colonist starts with one pack of Smarties (One pack of Smarties contains 15 pieces). - The members of Parliament take turns picking out tax cards from a bag. The king/queen reads the card, and the tax collectors collect Smarties from the colonists. - At the end, the tax collectors are allowed to keep 10% of the Smarties collected. The two members of Parliament each receive 40% of the Smarties collected by one of the tax collectors. The king/queen gets the remaining 50% of the Smarties from both tax collectors. Closure: The teacher will have students share their reactions to this activity. Ask students questions such as: - Do you think this activity was fair? Why or why not? - How did you feel during this activity? Why? - Do you think you wouldve felt differently if you had played another role in this activity? Optional: this reaction can be done as a writing assignment rather than a verbal explanation. Homework: Because it is Friday, students will not have social studies homework over the weekend.

Assessment: - Monitor and gauge student responses during the different stages of the lesson. Modifications/Differentiation: - Lesson will include role play and movement to keep up levels of engagement. - Closure discussion can be changed to a writing activity (optional).
