MYP ASSESSMENT TASK SHEET

Unit Title Signicant Concept(s) Information, heredity and technology.

Name: Grade: 9/10 Course: Science

Cellular organisms pass genetic information from one generation to another. Patterns of inheritance can be analysed and even predicted based on relationships. Biological processes are able to produce cells either for the purposes of growth and repair or reproduction. Both alleles, genes and environments impact on phenotype. One must carefully evaluate the possible effects of biotechnologies on society in the eld of genetics in order to make decisions about how they should be regulated. How does cellular information pass from one generation to another? How does an organism pass its characteristics on to its offspring? How can you predict the outcome of a genetic cross using both Punnett grids and pedigrees? How does a cell divide to create identical cells ? How does a cell divide to create cells with exactly half of the original cells genetic information? How can interactions between alleles, genes, and the environment affect an organisms traits? How can one evaluate the effect of a scientic technology affecting the eld of genetics on society in order to make decisions about how it should be regulated?

Unit Question(s)

Teacher Task Overview What do you have to do? Your task: Following essay writing convention, answer a question that you have developed following this generalised pattern: To what extent does (insert specic biotechnology here) solve the problem of (insert specic problem here) in (insert context here)? E.g. To what extent do articial hearts solve the problem of a shortage of hearts available for transplant in America? To what extent does stem cell therapy solve the problem of brain injury in adults? The essay must address the following: - provide a scientic explanation of how the technology solves the identied issue in the particular context, - discuss the benets and limitations of using the identied technology to solve the identied problem. - provide an explanation of how two One World Factors impact upon how effective the technology is in solving the identied problem in the particular context. This piece will also assess communication in science. As such, ensure that: - research has been conducted to identify appropriate sources and relevant information has been extracted from those sources, - you should attempt to paraphrase scientic information, taking care to demonstrate that you use scientic terms correctly and that you understand their meaning, - your writing should be objective and based on research. For example, when you evaluate implications instead of writing I feel that... you should write something like based on the research, the moral implications for ..... - an appropriate scientic diagram has been included (title and in-text citation included), - the body of written work should include in-text citations, following the APA style of referencing. - reference list should follow the APA style of referencing exactly. This takes some practice. Consult the provided APA guide for assistance Follow the outline criteria closely to ensure your essay contains all required elements.

How will you be assessed? When is the task due?

You will be assessed on Criteria A and B (see rubric following).

3rd April, 2014 or 4th April, 2014 (Check with your teacher for your specic date)

Criterion A: One World

Achievement level

Descriptor
The student does not reach a standard described by any of the descriptors below. Consistent with the complexity of the work covered: The student states how science is applied and how it may be used to address a specific problem or issue in a local or global context.

Task Specific Clarifications

You have given a specific statement/s that the particular identified application is used to solve the identified issue in the identified context. You have not explained how the application is used. You have made a statement/s about the effectiveness of the use of the application used to solve the identified health issue in the identified location. You have not explained the statements.

12

The student states the effectiveness of science and its application in solving the problem or issue.

Consistent with the complexity of the work covered:

The student describes how science is applied and how it may be used to address a specific problem or issue in a local or global context.

You have given a detailed account of how an application of Science is applied to try and solve a specifically identified issue related to an issue in a given context. You have given a detailed account of whether the application is effective in solving the issue. You have included benefits and/or limitations of using the application to solve the issue. Further justification was required to formulate arguments. You have given a detailed account of the implications associated with the use of the application in solving the issue in the particular location by considering one of moral, ethical, social, economic, political, cultural and environmental factors.

3-4

The student describes the effectiveness of science and its application in solving the problem or issue. The student describes the implications of the use and application of science interacting with at least one of the following factors: moral, ethical, social, economic, political, cultural and environmental.

Consistent with the complexity of the work covered: The student explains how science is applied and how it may be used to address a specific problem or issue in a local or global context. The student discusses the effectiveness of science and its application in solving the problem or issue. 5-6 The student discusses and evaluates the implications of the use and application of science interacting with at least two of the following factors: moral, ethical, social, economic, political, cultural and environmental.

You have given a clear account including causes and reasons of how an application of Science is applied (explain the ways in which science is applied) to try and solve a specifically identified issue related to energy demand in a given context. You have given an account including a range of arguments of whether the application is effective in solving the issue. You have included both benefits and limitations of using the application to solve the issue. You have critically discussed and evaluated the implications associated with the use and application of the application in solving the issue in the particular location by considering two of moral, ethical, social, economic, political, cultural and environmental factors. Your evaluation is written objectively and is based on fact and research.

Note in the following criteria: Describe is dened as to give a detailed account Explain is dened as to give a clear account including causes and reasons or mechanisms. Discuss is dened as to give an account including a range of arguments for and against the relative importance of various factors and comparisons of alternative hypotheses. Evaluate is dened as to assess the implications and limitations; to make judgments about the value of ideas, works, solutions or methods in relation to selected criteria. Scientic Language is dened as scientic terminology, vocabulary, symbolic language, ! units of measure.

Criterion B: Communication

Achievement level

Descriptor
The student does not reach a standard described by any of the descriptors below. Consistent with the complexity of the work covered: The student uses a limited range of scientific language correctly. The student communicates scientific information with limited effectiveness. When appropriate to the task, the student makes little attempt to document sources of information. Consistent with the complexity of the work covered: The student uses some scientific language correctly.

Task Specific Clarifications

You have attempted to put the information you have researched in your own words, sometimes using scientific terms. Information is unclear and meaning is not aided through clear explanation or visual aids such as pictures / diagrams. For a 2, a reference list has been included but not formatted correctly. For a 1, referencing is incomplete / absent.

12

You have shown that you can put the information you have researched in your own words. In doing this, you have used scientific terms. You have included mostly clear explanations or visual aids like pictures and/or diagrams to communicate scientific information. You have acknowledged sources of information by attempting to use an in-text references and a reference list, following APA format consistently.

3-4

With guidance, the student communicates scientific information with some effectiveness. When appropriate to the task, the student partially documents sources of information.

Consistent with the complexity of the work covered: The student uses sufficient scientific language correctly. With guidance, the student communicates scientific information effectively. When appropriate to the task, the student documents sources of information correctly.

You have shown that you can clearly put the information you have researched in your own words. In doing this, you have used scientific terms correctly. You have included clear explanation and/or pictures/diagrams communicate scientific information. Any visuals have an appropriate title and an in-text reference to acknowledge their source. They are appropriate and have been referred to in your writing to support it. You have correctly acknowledged sources of information using in-text references and a reference list, following APA format consistently.
