Solving Multivariable Equations Selected Response Clear Purpose: This formative assessment was developed to assess the knowledge and understanding of key concepts that ninth grade students would need in order to understand, create and solve multivariable equations. The purpose of the assessment is to help the instructor determine if students are understanding the key concepts about creating and solving equations with more than one variable. Another purpose of the formative assessment is to allow students to see how comfortable they are with this material, and in which areas they still need help with. This formative assessment will let the instructor have insight in which areas students are still struggling with and what they can work on in order for the students to be able to understand, create, and solve multivariable equations on their own. Standards: (from the Michigan Merit Curriculum) Standard A1: Expressions, Equations, and Inequalities A1.2 Solutions of Equations and Inequalities A1.2.1 A1.2.8 Targets: Learning Target I can create equations with many unknowns using real life situations. I can solve multivariable equations for each unknown. I can justify the steps I use to find solutions to an equation. Kelsey Johnson 3 Question 1 (5 possible points): Please read the following statement and answer both questions.
Maria is ten years older than her younger brother Tom. In one year Maria will be twice as old as Tom.
a. How old are they now? Please SHOW ALL WORK!
b. After finding Maria and Tom's ages, please explain how you arrived at your solutions. ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________
Kelsey Johnson 4 Question 2 (5 possible points): By using this table below, answer the following questions on the next page. Each toy in this table has a price. The sums of each row and column are shown except for the last row and column. Find the price of each toy and the missing sums. Please SHOW ALL WORK!
Kelsey Johnson 5 a. What are the prices for each toy? (Please write your solutions on the given spaces) Car Ball Pale & Shovel Doll Sailboat = $_________ = $_________ = $_________ = $_________ = $_________
b. What are the totals of the missing sums? (List your solutions below)
c. Please explain below the process you used to find your solutions for question a and question b. ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________
Self Reflection
Directions: Please take this time to answer the following questions honestly. You will not be graded
on your self reflection. It is a tool for me to see what my students thought was most difficult and was was not so difficult on this assessment. Please answer each question in complete sentences and do not be afraid to tell me exactly how you feel. Provide your answers in the space given under each question, and write your name in the upper right corner of the page. Turn this into me with your test when you are done.
1. After taking this test, what was the hardest problem for you? Why?

Kelsey Johnson 8 Rubric for Question 2: Scoring Description 5 Points Full and Complete Understanding I Understand, I can Create, and I can Solve Multivariable Equations I created the correct equations with many unknowns using the story problem given. I correctly solved the multivariable equations I have created. I was able to justify the steps I have used to find the prices of each toy and the two unknown values. I have shown that I have mastered all of the learning goals for this problem. I created equations that have many unknowns, that may not be correct. I solved for these unknowns, but did not solve each of them accurately. I was able to justify some of the steps I used to find the prices of each toy and the two unknown values. I have shown that I have mastered some, but not all of the learning goals for this problem. I created equations that are not correct. I solved for the equations incorrectly. I was not able to justify many of my steps I used to find the prices of each toy and the two unknown values. I have shown that I have mastered some, but not all of the learning goals for this problem. I did not respond to this question.
