The Old Kingdom Day 5

Subject: Ancient History Topic: The Old Kingdom Lesson Summary: Students will find out from this selection that the Egyptian people believed that pharoahs were living gods. This helped the pharaohs establish their reign and authority. The students will also discover from this selection that Egyptians believed in an afterlife and that this afterlife was accessible to all people. This belief in the afterlife inspired many pharaohs to have pyramids built as their burial tomb. During the course of these lessons students will discover different aspects of Egyptian life through media such as video and web based activities. Lesson Objectives: Students will explain Egypts political system. Students will describe the earliest uses of Egyptian writing. Students will describe early Egyptian architecture. Standards: HSS 6.2 Students analyze the geographic, political, economic, religious and social structures of the early civilizations of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Kush. HSS 6.23 Understand the relationship between religion and social and political order in Mesopotamia and Egypt. HSS Discuss the main features of Egyptian Art and architecture. Trace the evolution of language and its written form.

Duration: 1 hour

Input: Egyptian people believed that pharoahs were living gods. This helped the pharaohs establish their reign and authority. Egyptians also believed in an afterlife and that this afterlife was accessible to all people. This belief in the afterlife inspired many pharaohs to have pyramids built as their burial tomb. During the course of the lesson the students will read and discover about the old Egyptian kingdom. Students will review key terms from the google slides. Students will also review Burial of an Egyptian King from their Reflection textbook. . Model: Teacher will lead students into discovering the Treasure of King Tutankhamun from the students Reflection textbook. Teacher will lead the students into the online exploration of King Tutankhamun. http://www.kingtut.org/ Guided Practice:Students can begin the working on their one page summary on the life of King Tutankhamun either in their journals or chromebooks. Students will work in partners to choose one artifact or art piece to present to the class, they must give at least five facts about the artifact or art piece they found and have a picture of it. The students will also find the area of the objects that wrote down in their social studies journals from the previous days activity on finding the scale height of an object. Homework: Students will write or type a one page paper on the discovery, excavation and life of King Tutankhamen. Students will prepare their presentation on their art piece or artifact. The students must provide a print out the picture to present on the document camera or they can send me the link of their pictures through our classroom website. Materials used: Chrome books, pencils, paper, colored pencils, social studies journals, social studies reading notes
