Stephanie Albert February 9, 2014 Homework 7

1. I think that his thesis is about Malkins studies observing the retail chain in New York City and how ethnicities and immigration plays a role. She wants to see how customer interaction, managers, and employees affect the work place. As said on the third page of the reading, A labor market organized through ethnicity provides sociological analysis to understand those groups that stubbornly refuse to follow the standardized model of assimilation that remain essential to the American dream. I think this explains her entire piece due to the fact that it is based off of different ethnic backgrounds in the work place. 2. I believe there are many viewpoints to this aspect of the piece because when it comes to race and ethnicity, there are many things that could be discussed such as the hiring rate, the amount they make, and the customers interactions with them. I think she is trying to make the reader see just how diverse one corporation can be. It may look different on the outside but when studying a new group and getting to know how it works shows different things an outsider may not see. 3. Ethnicity and race, the workplace, and how employee/customer interactions are affected by these. I think these contribute as a whole because they are all intertwined in this piece of writing. Each aspect listed is discussed in just about every paragraph. I believe Malkin uses these three issues throughout her entire ethnography. 4. I like the way she intertwined her quotes from said interview. It fits perfectly into the writing and it gave me a good example on how to do that in my own ethnography. I also like how she addresses what she will be discussing before the chapter begins. This gives the reader the point she will be making and then she given data and experiences to back it up.

Questions: 1. In our ethnography, should we include different interviews throughout to make the writing stronger research? 2. At the beginning of the piece I thought she was staying away from discussing immigrants, yet throughout she mentions immigrants a lot. Why? 3. Although I stated what I thought the thesis in question 1, what does immigration have to do with the American dream?
