MAGNETIC PARTICLES TESTING Physical principle on which the magnetic particle inspection is based is the "magnetism" and this

principle is based on the behavior of magnets. By definition magnetism is "The invisible force that has the ability to develop mechanical work of attraction and repulsion of magnetizable materials." Materials: Magnetic Yoke Magnaflux brand. Sprinkler magnetic particle type shaker. Magnetic particles roses. Residual Field Meter. Steel plate.

Procedure: 1. An unabridged cleaning is made on the surface piece. This will remove all traces of slag and will prevent false indications during the inspection. 2. Magnetism is induced on the work piece by placing the yoke on its surface. 3. The magnetic particles are applied on the surface of the work piece. 4. The yoke is withdrawn from the work piece once the magnetic particles are fully applied. 5. The excess of magnetic particles is removed from the surface of the work piece. This is done by blowing the work piece uniformly. 6. A visual inspection is made to detect any resulting indications. 7. The indications are interpreted and evaluated to elaborate a final verdict.

Considerations We can only detect surface and sub-surface discontinuities. We can only detect discontinuities whose orientation is perpendicular to the magnetic flux that we are affecting.
