COURSES-REFLECTION I have learned so much during my time at Samford. I have been surprised at the level of expertise that all of my professors have had. I knew it would be a lot of work, but I did not know how much I would learn. I feel my time and experiences here will be invaluable to me for the rest of my career. Teaching is a profession that requires a lot of on the job training due to drastically different schools and administrations. However, my courses at Samford have done an excellent job preparing me for the teaching profession. They cannot always tell me exactly what it will be like, but they gave me the tools to be ready for (almost) any teaching scenario. Education Courses I was not sure what to expect when I started taking Education courses. I did not know if it would translate into usable information. I thought I may learn a lot of theories that are essentially useless in the real classroom. I was quickly proven wrong. I realized that most of the information I received in Education courses should be common sense regarding human nature. Of course, students dont want to do book work every day, instead they want to actively participate in learning. It should not be a surprise that we need engage students natural curiosity in order to engage them in learning. These things seemed like obvious answers in the beginning. Then I realized the trick is not understanding what you should do. It is, instead, figuring out how to do it effectively in the classroom. I know I need to make the content relevant to the students, but how can I make grammar relevant? That is the real question in education. We have all had teachers that knew what they should be doing, but instead took the easy way out. I wanted to make sure I did not become this teacher. It requires much more of myself to see students has individual learners, to reach them on their level, and bring them up the standard they need to reach. These education courses have taught me the importance of doing those things, as well as information on how to accomplish this goal.

They could not give me every scenario nor prepare me for every possibility. They were able to instill a sense of duty and understanding of how to be an effective teacher. English Content Courses I was very intimidated when I began my English content courses. I knew I loved literature, reading, and writing, but I was not sure I would be up to par with a graduate level English class. I realized it would be a lot of work, but I wanted to learn everything I could. These classes were very specific content such as: Southern Literature, Argumentation and Debate, and African American Literature. While I knew I would not teach a class solely on any one of these subjects, I was able to translate this information into my own teaching. Each class as a teaching/presentation component which was very helpful. I know that I love literature and reading. It is an entirely different skill to translate this information into lessons to help others understand. I learned how to break down books and teach the content to others. Additionally, the information I gained from the professors was invaluable. I realized appreciation for authors, genres, and material that I had never been exposed to before in my reading. I know I cannot teach As I Lay Dying to most classrooms, but perhaps I can pass on the information I learned about William Faulkner to a student and spark their interest in his work. I want to be able to instill appreciation for authors and their works to my own students in the hopes of created life-long readers and learners.
