Slippery Rock Borough is full of trash.

Being a college town means that Slippery Rock deals with a high volume of trash and recyclables so it is left with a large trash problem. The recycling issue was brought up Tuesday evening at the Slippery Rock Borough Council meeting held at the Slippery Rock Borough Building on East Water Street. Slippery Rock resident Chuck Brochetti came with camera in hand expecting answers that fellow Slippery Rock resident and Monetleone Apartment Manager, Bonnie Davis, was unable to receive at the previous meeting. I would just like to know why some places are receiving the recycling totes and others are not, Brochetti asked. What was the method behind their distribution? Was it something the borough came up with? Ronald Steele, a council member, told Brochetti that members of the community who received the new totes paid a fee in order to have the containers. And as far as Im concerned you can turn that camera off because thats all Im answering right now, Steele said. A full meeting regarding borough recycling will be held on March 18. In a 3-1 vote, the council agreed to temporarily remove parking from both sides of South Main Street on June 16, 2014. This temporary closing is due to the passing of the Appalachian Wagon Train through the borough. The no vote came from Dr. Itzi Metzli, a council member and SRU English Department professor, who was worried about the traffic jam the wagon train may cause. At one point the train will be coming down Kiester Road, Metzli said. This is the main entrance and exit for the University. If thats closed for the train, it would cause a huge traffic nightmare.

Metzlis concerns were met with enthusiasm for the wagon train from other council members. Council member Regina Greenwald said that this wagon train would be a great opportunity for the children of the area to experience some history. I would love for them to see the wagons, the costumes, and the history that this opportunity provides, Greenwald said. The council voted unanimously to move a zoning meeting concerning the rezoning of a property to accommodate a new church back to May 15. The rezoning of these areas will be discussed at the meeting as well as getting satisfaction from the Borough Engineer on the building of the church. Borough Solicitor John Trant said that the church has agreed to revise their plans until the engineers are satisfied. The council voted unanimously for the following items: Appoint Jeff Steele to the Planning Commission for a term of four years Approve the Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team to have their annual Boot Day on May 10 Approve Slippery Rock University hanging a banner across South Main Street congratulating graduates from May 8 through May 12 Approve Slippery Rock University hanging a banner across South Main Street announcing National Athletic training from March 1 to March 8 Approve the Traffic Signal Maintenance agreement with Bronder Technical from April 1, 2014 through March 31, 2015 at a total cost of $5,760
