Lilly Lo 4th Grade Lesson Plan Lesson 2: Comprehension: Cause and Effect Canterbury Elementary School November 20th,

2012

Lesson Plan
Describe the context: (Students, grade level, geographic location, community and school population, socio-economic profile, school culture, availability of technology, content, learning styles, ethnic breakdown, special needs, . . . Be detailed) 4th Graders Canterbury Elementary Greendale, WI School Culture: The school is a very close knit school. The teachers work with each other to benefit students learning. They collaborate with one another to enhance their students learning. Technology: In the classroom, there are 2 computers and some IPADS. There are 2 school computer labs available for classroom use. Special Needs: There is one student with special needs who has autism. Ethnic Breakdown: 2 African American, 1 Hispanic, 2 Asians, 19 Caucasian The purpose of this lesson is to help students recognize what cause and effect relationships are during reading. It is important that students are able to recognize cause and effect relationships to help them with their comprehension. In recognizing cause and effect relationships, students may better understand why something happened in a text and what lead to it. Objectives: -Students will analyze a text -Determine cause and effect relationships -Explain what event caused an event -Identify words that lead to cause and effect relationships Common Core Standards Reading Standards for Literature K5 Key Ideas and Details 1. Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

Learning Goals/Objectives Content Standards Affective Objectives: (related to student attitudes and values; think dispositions) Cognitive: (related to the mastery of knowledge: think Bloom) For help please go to Blooms Taxonomy of Learning Domains

Reading Standards: Foundational Skills (K5) Fluency 4. Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension. a. Read on-level text with purpose and understanding. Speaking and Listening Standards K5 Comprehension and Collaboration 1. Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher led) with diverse partners on grade 4 topics and texts, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly. 3. Identify the reasons and evidence a speaker provides to support particular points. Pre-Assessment: I have spoken with my cooperating teacher and she has told me that they have been briefly introduced to cause and effect. So I know that I may have to go more in depth with cause and effect and what it is. Through my observations, I have seen that the students love to read and are equipped with several strategies already to help their comprehension. I will be helping them expand their strategies by introducing the give one, get one strategy. I also included technology in this lesson because I have noticed that the students love to work with the classroom IPADs. They have shown me that they can be responsible when handling such technology.

Pre-Assessment: (What will you do/what have you done to know that the student(s) need to be taught this information.) Academic Language

Assessment (Criteria / Look Fors; How will you assess learning? What will you do to know if the students have met the objectives?)

What Rubrics or other scoring scales will be used? Students SelfAssessment

Assessment: After the lesson, we will have a discussion about what were some cause and effect situations from their reading. I will ask everyone to share a cause and effect from their reading. Also, I will be collecting the cause and effect worksheets.

What is cause and effect relationship? Enduring Understanding/Essential Question(s): (What are the big ideas? What thought provoking question(s) will guide the lesson?) Why do I need to know what a cause and effect relationship is? What are some key words that will help me in determining a cause and effect relationship?

Instructional Procedures Learning Strategies: (Be sure to include specific strategies to develop literacy of content)

Introduction: Remind the students: (5 minutes) When you all took your WKCEs, Mrs. Mackenzie briefly went over what cause and effect was. Do any of you remember or can you describe what a cause and effect relationship is? Explain to students: A cause and effect relationship o Cause: something that makes something else happen o Effect: what happens as a result of the cause Why is it important to know what cause and effect relationships are? o It helps me with comprehension. I can understand what I am reading if I know what caused something to happen. o Sometimes when I read something, I stop at an event and think to myself, Whao! How did this happen? o So I need to identify the cause so I understand why something happened.

Introduction Pre (How will you motivate, activate prior knowledge, . . .)

Closure Post Extension

Examples: Cause He kicked the ball John spilt ketchup on his shirt Sarah is tired Katie jumped off the sofa Carl studied for his test

Effect The ball hit the window John changed his shirt She fell asleep early She got hurt He got an A on his test

Making connections to real life: Mrs. Los cause and effect relationships o Since I wasnt watching where I was walking and tripped over a rock. (Have students tell you what the cause and effect are.) o As I put my turkey sandwich on the table to answer my phone, my dog snuck up behind me and ate my whole sandwich.

Can you come up with 2 cause and effect relationships on your own? o (Write their examples on worksheet provided) Give One, Get One

o Share one cause and effect relationship with your partner and theyll share one with you Reminder: One cause can lead to many effects Ex: Because JR stayed up late last night, he forgot to set up his alarm, woke up late, and missed the bus. There are also key words that hint us to cause and effect relationships and we should be looking out for these words while we read. o Some Key Words If Then So So that Since Because Due to As a result

Model: Read Hamster Cause and Effect Story Teacher Identifies cause and effect relationships from the story and models think aloud

Activity: Have students read Foggy Figure as group or individual o Determine some cause and effects Fill out cause and effect graphic organizer o Whole group discussion on what cause and effect relationships they were able to find
