Your background in the arts, generally. Do you have minimal knowledge/experience as a producer or consumer of art? Do you have extensive knowledge of a particular art form? Somewhere in between? A time when you were moved by a work of art. What impressed you about this experience? Your thoughts about arts integration as a pedagogical tool: what excites you, what concerns you?

What is Arts Integration?

From The Kennedy Center . . .

Arts Integration is . . .
A powerful vehicle for crossing boundaries between

core subjects and art concepts, and affective and cognitive forms of expression. A strategy to move art from the sidelines of education. A curriculum developed with artists and educators as peers. A negotiation between the learner and the community. A way of thinking about teaching and learning.

Arts Integration Involves . . .

Forging clear connections between arts and the rest

of the academic curriculum. Building long-term relationships among schools, arts organizations, and community organizations to deepen the quality of instruction over time. Students making connections between what they are learning, and what they are living. Students actively finding problems and asking questions.

Arts Integration is NOT . . .

Art as a reward. The arts are an active vehicle for

instruction and learning. A formulaic pedagogical tool. Each unit/project generates fresh problems and unique opportunities for learning. An island. Arts integration allows for meaningful partnerships with the community, and for students to extend their learning beyond the classroom. About strict roles. Students participate extensively in the planning and conceiving of projects and products. Arts integration is inherently social.

The Arts . . .
Allow for multiple modes of inquiry. Provide increasingly challenging opportunities to

generate and represent knowledge over time. Function as a way to commit concepts and content to memory. Provide concrete evidence of learning. Invite intellectual depth. Help students think metaphorically. Reveal the internal logical of learners. Open dialogue between students and teachers, parents, and the community.
