Report of the Management Committee for the year ended 31 st December 2013 In general, 2013 has been a very

difficult year. The economic situation has put pressure on everyone. Our golf clubs are under great strain and we have seen some fall by the wayside and are ta en over. !s I write this report there are continuing discussions on the stability of several and the dreaded "levies# word is bac in vogue. Our members have all been affected by subscription and playing fee increases as clubs struggle to eep on an even eel. Increasing fuel prices $and tolls for us %autengers& ma e golfing costs less and less affordable. The spiral is a vicious one as the ever increasing charges chase more and more golfers into longer wor lives and less golf. These problems are not uni'ue to (outh !frica and in the )(! there are a reported estimated 1*+00 clubs. ,owever since 200- these have decreased by an estimated 1*0.1/0 annually. One of the results of the pressure on clubs has been the introduction of loyalty cards and special playing fee structures to incentivise club members to play their golf at their home club, not having to pay high visitors rates. 0et every club is trying to attract corporate and visitor rounds to subsidise member golf and specials are the order of the day. 1e believe that one way forward for clubs would be for clubs with li e subscription and playing fee structures to allow greater fle2ibility in their playing fee charges to visitors from those clubs, in other words allowing greater local reciprocity to each others members. This wor s very well in 3ohannesburg over the 4hristmas season, is it not now time to ma e it a more permanent arrangement5 !t the closing dinner in 3ohannesburg 6ast 6resident (teyn 6ienaar made a plea for (eniors to give up some of their comfort 7one and get involved in the management of their clubs, giving the clubs the benefit of their e2perience and business acumen. 8egrettably little of this seems to have happened. 9ore and more #young Tur s# rush into club committees, often forgetting the value of the steady regular rounds played by the older members. 4ourses are set up for young bloods, not creating a pleasant playing environment for the older age groups. (adly, the effect has been the departure of some of those players for the cheaper pleasures of bowls and T: sport. To add to all of these woes the diminishing real income of many players creates its own pressures as investment returns become increasingly ris y and sound financial practice demands more conservative policies. (eniors is also affected by these problems. 9ost provinces have seen new member numbers under pressure and most are under 'uota at present. One problem being seen is that where (eniors have home clubs there is a tendency towards greater (enior membership from home club members and the creation of #clubs within clubs#. ;i ewise the loyalty cards often mean that a holder of the card is less and less willing to play away from home, if this is then not the (eniors (ociety home the problem worsens. I believe the boo ing of away games has become increasingly e2pensive and

difficult, this despite the stated desire to attract visitor rounds by clubs. 1here does (%)(! stand against this bac ground5 The membership numbers are marginally down on those of previous years. One ray of sunshine is the steady growth of <orthern %auteng and we loo forward to their ta ing their place in the <ational Tournament roster in =ust a few years. !lready they have stepped up to the plate and successfully hosted the Interprovincial caddie tournament twice, with a third coming up in 201>. (%)(! finances are a strong and sustainable. The ?inancial (tatements for the year are published below and ma e good reading. The funds under administration are capable of supporting the administration costs of the )nion and of carrying any disaster should one befall a <ational Tournament. ?or many years now we have sponsored and administered the annual Interprovincial 4addie Tournament. The main ob=ectives in so doing have been to assist 6rovincial %olf )nions in their promotion of better conditions for caddies through training and holding provincial leagues. This has not met universal favour and several provinces have not ta en much action in this area, both within (eniors and the 6rovincial )nions themselves. The %overning @ody of (%)(! directed 9ancom to secure assistance from (!%! but I am disappointed to say that although we have met with (!%! representatives we have not made much progress. It is a strong possibility that the 201> Tournament will be the last run under our banners. The plan is that the funds previously made available to fund this tournament will be made available to those societies who are able to achieve the main ob=ectives through cooperation with their 6rovincial golf )nions. ;i ewise, during the same meeting with (!%! we attempted to eliminate the confusion in names between our (ocieties and the organisation run under (!%! previously nown as #(enior !mateurs#. In this we were advised that (enior !mateurs no longer e2ists and that future events run for older golfers will be billed as (!%! senior events. Than s largely to the efforts of our past Treasurer, 8obin 1righton we have succeeded in clearing the ta2 status of most of the provincial societies and to confirm that they are not ta2 paying entities. Our than s to 8obinA One area that has received lots of attention over the past years has been the use of forward tees and the conditions for our competitions. The dictum of (!%! in this regard has made life a lot easier and I can now confirm that (eniors <ational Tournament competitions will in future be played from a single set of user friendly tees with all participants playing from full handicaps. These tees will be properly rated. 2013 National Tournament. Bast ;ondon is an e2ceedingly pleasant venue and many than s are due to @order for hosting such a friendly and successful 2013 Tournament. 1ell prior to the tournament it was recognised that the 'uality of the 1est @an golf course and clubhouse was a concern. ! number of visits were made to 1est @an and specific proposals made as to course preparation. The staff and management of 1est ban were e2tremely helpful and co.operated well. !s part of this process a generic document #4ourse preparation #was prepared and should be of future benefit. The camaraderie and social interaction remains central to the <ational Tournament

and perhaps more attention should be given to the mid.wee social event in order to facilitate these e2pectations, particularly as it has been decided on a trial basis in Curban to streamline the event by eliminating the (unday from the programme. Bntries were limited to 32>. This is a very manageable number for a variety of reasons and it is li ely that this number will in future remain the limit whatever the demand. <otwithstanding the course set.up guidelines discussed at length with @order, there were still some glitches with the relative position of tees. This aspect re'uires more direct intervention from the local team. Dwa.Eulu <atal is using a single set of tees so that this particular problem is obviated. 6lanning for the 201+ @loemfontein tournament has started which !rthur %ilbert and his team are determined to ma e a success. !s always our than s are due to (cotty !shton (cot and his helpers for the @order arrangements and to 8oss %rainger and 3ets e for their efforts in ensuring a smooth administration Financial Statements. Curing the year we investigated whether it would be possible to en=oy the same 'uality of audit, yet presenting a much abridged set of accounts. These accounts are in line with this reporting and, we believe, give members sufficient information to =udge the current assets and liabilities of the )nion as well as the summarised income and e2penditure on a meaningful basis without having to wade through 3- pages of policies and schedules as though (%)(! was a 3(B 'uoted company. 1e would welcome any comment o the success or otherwise of our efforts. International Tours. Curing ?ebruary and 9arch 2013 two groups of (outh !frican (eniors embar ed on very successful tours of !ustralia hosted by the (enior %olfersF (ociety of !ustralia. The programmes prepared by the hosts included golf on some wonderful courses, some of which rated amongst the best in !ustralia, combined with an interesting and varied programme for the non.golfers and on free days. The Bastern tour captained by 3ohn @rownrigg and consisting of 1* (eniors and their wives visited ,obart $Tasmania&, 4anberra and (ydney before completing their tour in @risbane on the %old 4oast on 2> 9arch. In all the touring party played nine games of golf and were very well loo ed after by their hosts. The 'uality of the company, food and beverages en=oyed by the tourists was sadly not matched by the 'uality of their golf and they were soundly beaten in most of the matches with the ladies faring marginally better. The (outhern tour by a group of 1> (eniors and their wives and captained by 3ohn ;udwig commenced their tour on 2/ ?ebruary in 9elbourne before heading off to !delaide and the completion of the tour in 6erth. The (outh !fricans proved their prowess and grit by triumphing 2.1 in 9elbourne, recovering from a 0.1 deficit. The rigours of late nights, high temperatures and good food and drin clearly too their toll and the touring party was thoroughly trounced in !delaide and 6erth. In all, the tours were great successes and much en=oyed by the participants, largely due to the wonderful hospitality shown by the hosts. 9any friendships were renewed and forged and will doubtlessly endure for many years to come. In 3uly (%)(! was represented by two teams of four at the 2013 Ding ;eopold

4hallenge in @elgium played at the 8oyal !ntwerp %4 and the 1ouwse 6lantage %4. The teams were captained by ;yle ThGle, with @obby 3ohnston as vice captain, and ac'uitted themselves well, coming *th and -th overall. !pparently the greensomes event proved to be their undoing. The participants all thoroughly en=oyed the e2perience, not least as a result of the superb organisation and hospitality accorded them. !lthough invited to participate, we were unable to send representative teams to the International 9eeting in Ceauville during 3uly or to the 1orld (enior %olf International Team Tournament in <ew 9e2ico, )(!, during !ugust 2013. The (enior %olfersF (ociety of the )nited Dingdom has accepted an invitation for 1* (eniors and their wives to tour (outh !frica from the 23rd ?ebruary until the 13th 9arch 201+. The tour is scheduled to commence in 4ape Town with the tourists visiting %eorge and Curban before travelling to 3ohannesburg. Ciscussions are underway with the host (ocieties regarding finalisation of the itinerary. General. Curing the year we have been luc y to have received 6residential visits from 3immy (tott on two occasions and have benefitted from his participation. I would li e to than the members of 9ancom for their efforts and the considerable time they put into ensuring the affairs of the )nion are sound and continuing to support (%)(!. Our secretary, 3ets e Dingma, has again supported (%)(! efficiently and has made our 9ancom lives much easier. ,er administrative capabilities are e'ualled only by her ability to now and greet all members of our <ational familyA To her, and on your behalf also, my special than sA John Hare Chairman Management Committee Senior Golfers Union of South Africa

! proposed stance by (eniors on the use of forward tees in 6inehurst competitions was tabled at the %auteng 4ommittee and accepted. It was also decided to table the suggestion at a meeting of 9ancom for consideration and if approved to be forwarded to the various (ocieties for consideration. #It is recommended that the (enior (ociety of %auteng adopt the following rule which would apply to all 6inehurst competitions conducted under its auspicesH ! golfer electing to play off a particular set of tees at the start of a competition ta ing place over more than one round, may not alter his election for the duration of the competition without the consent of the 4ommittee of the (enior %olfersF (ociety of %auteng.
