]MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

I think it will flow in to the egg HYPOTHESIS: osmosis is the diffusion of a higher consistency of water traveling in to a lower consistently of water. If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for three days, then the water will flow from the vinegar across the membrane into the egg. The vinegar will dissolve the shell losing some wait, but will gain some wait case water will flow in the egg. The egg is only 74% and the vinegar is 95% because the vinegar has a higher consistent of water so there for water will flow in to the egg threw the membrane in to the egg THEORY: osmosis is the theory of the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to a area of low concentrating across selectively permeable membrane PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 150 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 2 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 13.5 15.2 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 300 OBSERVATIONS Bubbles collecting on egg shell The shell has disinograted and it is very choky. There was a stronger smell smell of vinegar. There is also foam on top. It was floating Was not floating. It was yellow. Had not much cholk

CONCLUSION In this lab we were investigating osmosis. Osmosis is the study of water of a higher concentration of water molecules flowing in to an area of lower concentration of water molecules. We tested an egg that is 74% water and vinegar that is 95% water. Compared to the rest of the 7th grade average of 2.7 expansion, are expansion was only 2.2 which is .5 centimeters. We set the egg in the vinegar for four days. My hypothesis was that the water would flow in to the egg threw the selective permeable membrane. My hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS

1. The egg shell is calcium carbonate and the vinegar is a weak acid. So the egg shell will dissolve allowing the water to flow in to the egg threw the selectively permeable membrane. Expanding the egg. 2. The difference of expansion between period 7 and group 3 is 3.4. But the expansion is between a whole period and 1 group. So in period 7 probably every body did not have 4.5 expansions, some probably had more and less. The rat of group 1 was .27 inches a day, the rate of period 7 was 1.12 every day. Maybe group 3 had a thicker shell and period seven had thinner shells.

3. Cells need water to live. If they dont have water they would dry up and die. The cells need water so it has energy and nurturance. If it doesnt have water the cell will die.
