1.3 Anticipatory Set Introduce the US map Ask students if they can locate the Northeast, including Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Ask students if theyve ever traveled to any of these states, including Maine, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, New York, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Rhode Island, and Connecticut. Now we will introduce the North East. Divide students into groups (2-3 students per group) 1.4 Procedures 1. Pass out construction paper puzzles to each group (2-3 students per group). 2. Have groups put puzzle together. 3. When finished, go over the puzzle on the board in front of the class to make sure everyone has their pieces correct. 4. Next, have students pull facts out of a hat and try to guess which state it belongs to. Give

students enough time to be able to guess. 5. Explain the state fact that goes with each state. 6. Have students write down facts about each state they already know on their corresponding puzzle pieces. 7. After students have finished writing down facts they may know about each state, have each group share one thing they know for one state. 1.5 Differentiation English Language Learners- For an ELL, we will place them in a group with a student who is willing to help them. When talking about the climate, provide pictures to describe the climate (snow for the cold states, sun for the warmer states) Hearing Impaired- Have students sit in a circle so the hearing impaired student can see everyone. Include visuals for facts and climate for student to see. 1.6 Closure Pass out summative assessment worksheet to be completed and handed in before the end of class. Before students begin worksheet asks students to tell the class one thing they learned from another group member about their state. 1.7 Formative/Summative Assessment of Students Formative: During the lesson, walk around observe students as they are working on their maps and their facts. Summative: After the lesson, have students complete the worksheet. The worksheet will include a map in which they must label each state, and answer a few true or false statements. This worksheet should be graded for correctness. 1.8 Materials/Equipment A. Student Resources Maps Worksheet Puzzle pieces Fun facts about each state B. Teacher Materials Background content (Facts on each state) 1.9 Technology PowerPoint for showing pictures of the typical climate 2.1 Reflection Working on our first lesson was a great experience. All group members contributed to the discussion and expressed their ideas and perspectives in a respectful way. With the multitude of input, we were able to create a fantastic first lesson that can be beneficial and fun for all types of learners. One aspect of our lesson that was great was the construction paper puzzle. This will allow students to visually see what each state looks like and how the North East States fit together. Working as a group allowed us to become more comfortable with conducting fun, interesting, informative social studies lessons.
