NHD 6reetin!s from <ississippi5 Althou!h our pro!ram is still relatively small, with the State 2ontest #ein! the only official competition and our co&coordinators servin! on a volunteer #asis, we are ma(in! !reat pro!ress$ Since the 200K affiliate event 0the first one after Hurricane @atrina, in 200-1, student participation has !rown #y B00L and the num#er of schools increased #y 400L$ NHD in <S is housed in the History Department at the *niversity of Southern <ississippi in Hatties#ur!, and faculty mem#ers Dr$ Allison A#ra and Dr$ Deanne Nuwer are our co& coordinators$ *niversity students and professors also serve as excellent contest 'ud!es, as well as pro'ect mentors$ )wenty&year NHD :eteran 3enee <c2lendon came to <ississippi from %owa and South Da(ota, in 200/, and serves as a full&time volunteer for NHD in <S$ As our pro!ram !rows, our <ississippi teachers are increasin!ly reali+in! the importance of NHD s(ills for their students and coura!eously steppin!&up to provide this vital learnin! opportunity$ )hey report that easy access to curriculum !uides, pro'ect examples and other resources have proven very helpful$ Additionally, coordinator visits to school sites help stren!then relationships and confidence of teachers, students and parents$ =est wishes to everyone for fantastic affiliate events, loo(in! forward to seein! you all soon, in >une5
