MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane to an are of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesize that water will flow from the vinegar into the egg because the vinegar has a higher concentration of water. The egg had a 74% concentration of water and the vinegar had a 95% concentration of water. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 4 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 16.0 cm 17.0 cm 18.0 cm LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 300mL 295mL OBSERVATIONS Bubbles on egg 50ml displacement most of Shell dissolved A thin slimy coat surrounds shell

CONCLUSION In this lab we investigated the process of osmosis. Our egg expanded 2 cm. Compared to the entire seventh grad our egg expanded less. Our groups egg expanded demonstrating that water moved from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration ANALYSIS

ANALYSIS:

DIRECTIONS: Answer the following questions. For question number one, must use the following words in your paragraph: egg shell (calcium carbonate), vinegar (weak acid), selectively permeable membrane.

1. What caused the eggshell to dissolve? The eggshell dissolved because of contact with the vinegar. The vinegar being a weak acid went through the selectively permeable membrane and dissolved the calcium carbonate shell.

2. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Compare the results of these two groups. What was the difference in expansion? What was the rate (distance/time) of expansion in 4 days? Explain the discrepancy in data. Why did these groups get different results?

GROUP # 3 7

PERIOD 7 TOTAL EXPANSION IN 4 DAYS 4.5 cm 1.1 cm

Over 4 days group 3s egg expanded 3.4 cm more than group 7. Group 3s egg could have expanded more if there was a lower concentration of water in the egg. 3. Why do cells need water?

Cells need water because water is an important enzyme that speeds up many chemical reactions. Water also helps to transport things like proteins around a cell.
