Royal Saskatchewan Museum Lesson Plan

1. Outcomes: DR8.1, DR8.2, CP8.12, CR8.1, CR8.5, CR8.6, CR8.8, WS8.2, 2. Instructional Objectives: Some of the take aways to our secret activity are that students will answer questions around the museum and get to explore all of the galleries and exhibits in their free time. By doing this they will learn about First Nations, Life Science and Earth Sciences. They will learn how to work better in a group situation under stressful conditions that the secret activity will bring their way. They will practice their knowledge by taking notes throughout free time and stretch their minds by memorizing facts in our secret activity.

3. Content: Introduction/Motivational Device Welcome to the Royal Saskatchewan Museum. It was previously called the Provincial Museum and was formed to what it is now in 1906. The museum is placed on side of the beautiful Wascana Park, in the heart of our Queen City. This area is rich in history and we are here to show you some of that history in a creative way. To start you off, you will complete a fun interactive puzzle to tell you what you is our activity will be. You will be split into 5 teams of 4 and 1 team of 5. Begin! *handout and wait for students to complete puzzle* Now that you have figured out our activity, that will lead you in your learning. We will explain to you how the activity will work. Although it is a race, please be mind full of everyone else and keep your pace down to a walk. We will give you a question/riddle and you will have to venture through this great place to come up with your answer. You will come to us and we will hand out the next question/riddle for you to answer. This will be repeated several times until your team of 4 has completed all the question/riddles. You will have to report to us and tell us all the answers off of your memory, no notebooks! So, that means memorize these key facts to leading your team to victory. Subject content/ Topics

Small group student lead search to find and solve riddles/ questions throughout the museum (read fact/plaques, etc.) Free romp of the museum to use to students liking and preference of learning, Group discussion to explain and help guide what was learned, liked, passionate areas, etc. Learning Activities/ Procedures Direct Instruction, Teams of 4 go on a secret activity throughout the museum, several minutes of free romp of the museum, Group Discussion on what is learned. Key Discussion Questions 1. Which eco regions does the North Saskatchewan River flow through? 2. How much of the earths surface do tropical rainforests grow on compared to how many species live in them? 3. What animal in the Mixed Grasslands diorama has the most predators? 4. In the winter, the First Nations of the plains camped in the valleys. What was the reason? 5. How many years did it take for the First Nations to be able to vote? 6. Why did the British Crown and First Nations people enter into treaty? 7. How many glaciers have covered Saskatchewan in the past two million years? Closure We hope you enjoyed our secret activity and the excitement of this beautiful location. We hope you benefited from this important and engaging activity. Different Learning Activities: It supplies elements of learning to meet the curriculum while challenging the brain with these questions and riddles. It will combine the fun and excitement of the secret activity with the learning of an amazing and advanced school day. 5. Open discussion after the activity. Combine groups to make 4 groups. Discuss what was learned in our secret activity and free time. Each person shares a fact that surprised them or that they didnt know before. Reflection
