AFRICA
COAST LINES. Peninsulas. The Peninsula of Tunisia, Africa.
‘The peninsula of Tunisia in North Africa, which is shown on the map above, is quite different in shape
from the peninsulas of Korea and Florida described in the lst two examples. The most striking element about
‘Tunisia is its iregular outline, and particularly the long projection which points toward the island of Sicily.
‘Around the shores of the westem Mediterrancan are scveral other knobby’ projections which also sccm to re
quire an explanation. From Spain on the north and from Africa on the south arc two projections which are di-
rected toward each other and which are separated by the narrow Strait of Gibraltar. Along the Mediterranean
coast of Spain are several other protuberances, the problem of whose origin may likewise be of interest: To these
several promontories a question mark has been placed on the map. Italy and Sicily too have several noteworthy
projections or peninsulas. Particularly notable are the “toc” and the “heel” of Italy. The toe of Italy points to-
‘ward the long caste point of Sicily, from which itis separated by the very narrow Strait of Messina. The whirl-
pools and strong currents in this strait were feared by the ancient sailors, and gave risc to the logend of Seylla
‘and Charybdis, two female monsters with heads of fierct dogs who were a menace to scafacrs
Tt would secm that if we could explain any one of these points and protuberances, we might perhaps at the
same time find a duc to the other.
In the western Mediterrancan two groups of islands may also be pointed out. The western group of thrce or
four small islands constitutes the Balearic Isles. The two large islands of the castcm group arc the islands of
Corsica and Sardinia. The contrasting form of the islands inthe two groups is worthy of attention. The Balearic
Isles with their small projecting points are quite different from the bold angular outline of Corsica and Sardinia
In Example 30 the origin of these large islands will be explained, while perhaps the Balearics will t into
the scheme to be presented on the following page, a scheme which will also explain Tunisia.
