Elements of Design: Balance - The distribution of interest or visual weight in a work; symmetric, asymmetric, radial Contrast - The difference in quality between two instances of an art element, or using opposing qualities next to each other; values (like black vs white), lines/shapes/forms (like organic vs geometric), textures (like rough vs smooth) Harmony - Elements work together and complement each other; random splotch of neon pink in Van Gogh's Starry Night is not harmonious, but it is in a Jackson Pollock painting (this is a hard one) Movement - Using art elements to direct a viewer's eye along a path through the artwork, and/or to show movement, action and direction Rhythm - Repeating art elements in regular or cyclical fashion to create interest, movement, and/or harmony; can be random, regular, alternating, flowing, and/or progressive Visual artists, your final art assignment before scenery painting is to create a work of art that embodies at least two of these elements to hang in the art show.
