Basic Information Full Name: Shelby Lynn Lahey UC Email: laheysl@mail.uc.edu College: McMicken College of Arts and Sciences Major: Exploratory Studies Title of Project: WTOL Summer Sport Broadcasting Internship Thematic Area (choose only one): Creative Arts Expected Project Start Date: May 1, 2014 Expected Project End Date: August 1, 2014 Project Information 1. Provide a detailed abstract of your proposed honors experiential learning project. This summer I will be interning at a local news station, WTOL Toledo News Now, with the weekend sports anchor. I will be interning at WTOLs news station in order to learn the ropes of sport broadcasting and all that this profession entails. From learning how to operate in the tech room to broadcasting a few shows on air, I will become exposed to real life experiences that will verify whether or not this is the right career path for me. During my internship, I plan to write a journal that will accumulate every day I am at the station that talks about my experiences in the news room and valuable lessons I will have learned. This journal will be written from an objective perspective so that at the end of my internship, I can look back at my experience being forced to remember not solely the good things about the job, but downsides to it as well. This objective standpoint journal that I will be writing will help me make an accurate decision in the process of deciding if sport broadcasting is my calling in life. This internship is both a challenge and a blessing. It will be a challenge because it will be pushing me to a develop skill that I am not the best at, public speaking. This skill is vital for a sport broadcaster and for many other aspects in life. I am in hope that this internship will transform me in the area of public speaking and I will learn new ways to effectively handle my fear and lack of confidence when it comes to this area. This internship is a blessing because I have been given the opportunity to gain experience with professionals at such a young age. The news crew at WTOL is welcoming me into their business and letting me observe how to be a professional. I will be learning how to consult with others, work with a team of skilled professionals, meet many different types of people related in the profession, research information, compile statistics, write reports, successfully conduct an interview during event sideline reporting, provide play by play commentary on a game, critically assess the results of a sporting event, and interview athletes after a sporting event has taken place. These skills are crucial assets to a sport broadcaster that I plan to watch emerge and develop during the time of my internship. The time commitment I will make during this internship is a total of 156 hours. I will be going to the station four days a week for around 3 hours, equaling out to 12 hours a week for 13 weeks from my start date of May 1, 2014 to August 1, 2014.

Clearly and thoroughly address how each of the following elements will be exhibited in your work: 2. Connection to Learning Outcomes within the Honors Thematic Area (identified above) The learning outcomes for the Creative Arts Honors Theme that I will be exhibiting and implementing into my intern ship are: Acquires or further develops competencies within a particular creative domain. I will be learning many roles and responsibilities of sport broadcasting and the corresponding skill sets that are needed to successfully carry out each duty. The ability to recognize when and how to use all of the competencies that sport broadcasting entails is what makes it an art form. If at the end of my internship I feel this career path is one that I will pursue, acquiring and developing these skills at this early part of my career with make me valuable to future employers and a threat to the completive administrative world of sport management. Possess a well-developed awareness of theories and methods in the field. Sport broadcasting is not something that one can just wing and it is not something that everyone has the ability to do, let alone do it well. There is a method to the madness and there are ways to perform the job correctly in order to obtain successful results. There are articles, websites, books, television networks, and even schools that are dedicated to educating people about the creative art of sport broadcasting. It is a crucial practice to many that requires a lot of education, practice, and experience. During my internship, I will be learning the theories and methods that are implemented in the field of sport broadcasting directly from a professional. I will be documenting my findings in my internship journal. Demonstrates/takes appropriate risk in successfully completing project (going beyond original parameters of assignment, introducing new materials and forms, tackling controversial topics, advocating unpopular ideas or solutions, etc.). For this project, I plan to create a journal that will summarize my internship. Each day I am on scene at my internship, I will record my experiences in the news room and valuable information or lessons I will have learned. I will also be incorporating photos in my journal of all aspects of sport broadcasting. Whether it be pictures in the news room or pictures of people I work with, it will show others what I experienced. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words! This journal will be written from an objective perspective so that at the end of my internship, I can look back at my experience being forced to remember not solely the good things about the job, but downsides to it as well. This aspect of my journal will require me to make a level headed decision about sport broadcasting as my career path. This journal is not required by any means and the sport broadcaster I am interning did not ask me/give me the idea to do this. I came up with the idea to create this journal as a way to go beyond the original parameters of my duties as an intern. 3. Connection to Goals and Academic Theories (include reference list, as appropriate) A. This project contributes to my future academic, professional, and/or personal goals because I am in the process of deciding if sport broadcasting will be a career path for me. If at the end of my internship I feel this career path is one that I will pursue, acquiring and developing these skills at this early part of my career with make me valuable to future employers and a threat to the completive administrative world of sport management. If at the end of my internship I decide that sport broadcasting is not a career I want to pursue, I will have a gained a priceless experience and gotten to live out a small dream of mine. I will also

continue to immensely respect the profession of sport broadcasting and be fascinated by it. This opportunity is so valuable because it will help me make a serious decision in my life. Either way, my internship this summer is a win-win and a positive thing that will have occurred in my life. I will look at this an accomplishment no matter what. B. The specific theories, readings, concepts, or courses I will use to prepare or gain background knowledge for your project has already been put together in a ten page Dream Job research paper that I wrote for my Introduction to Sport Administration class that I am enrolled in this semester. This paper is about my dream position in the sport business industry as a sport broadcaster. The paper uses many resources and even involves a professional sport broadcaster as a source. The content discussed is as follows:

Introduction-What is sport broadcasting? I. II. III. IV. Roles and responsibilities of sport broadcasting Identify and explain the skill sets and competencies necessary for success Research and interview an individual in sport broadcasting Document the educational and career path of the individual that was interviewed V. Document and describe the course of action plan you will take to achieve your professional goals Conclusion- Summary of Sport Broadcasting and what I have learned
4. Initiative, Independence, and/or Creativity My unique contribution to this project would be the comprehensive, objective journal that I will be creating throughout my internship. The skills, ideas, or previous experiences that I bring to the table are the research that I have done, the classes I have taken regarding sport related professions, and the real life experiences that I have had during my past years of being involved with athletics. All of these factors are what drive my love for sports. My involvement with this internship is unique as compared to other participants because I also have a bit of journalism background as well. During this past academic year here at UC, I took a few journalism classes that deal with writing, reporting, and being involved in the media. The things I learned in these classes will be tested this summer and I can implement my knowledge into my work. I have demonstrated initiative with the internship in the manner of how I got the internship. I interviewed the professional sport broadcaster that I will be working with this summer, Jordan Strack, for the paper that I wrote for my Introduction to Sport Administration paper. I spent time asking Jordan many questions regarding his profession and got to know him. After the interview, he asked me if I would be interested in interning with him this summer and I immediately accepted the great opportunity. If I would not have contacted Jordan Strack and conducted an interview with him, I would not have been granted the opportunity of this internship. 5. Reflection I will actively reflect on my learning throughout the experience of my internship through my recordings in my journal. The format for reflection will be writing down in detail my experiences in the news room and valuable information or lessons I will have learned. I will also be incorporating photos in my journal of all aspects of sport broadcasting. The pictures will be in the news room or pictures of people I will work with in order to show others what I experienced. A list of reflective questions that will reside at the end of my journal and be answered after the end of my internship will be:

What is the most valuable piece of information I have learned throughout this internship? What weaknesses have transformed into strengths throughout this experience? What was my favorite memory during this process? How will this internship help me in the future or in future job searching? Do you truly want to become a sport broadcaster? 6. Dissemination I will share what I learned and created with others in a public forum by either making my journal into a scrapbook or publishing the material in my honors learning portfolio. The specific audience I am trying to target with these two public forums are people that are close to me and people that will be interested in my involvement with this experiential learning project. Those who are close to me would be able to view my personal scrapbook that would be extremely detailed and well crafted. The people that would be interested in my involvement with this experiential learning project would be able to freely access my learning portfolio and explore my experience as they wish.
