Lesson/Activity Plan Template Teacher Candidate _________________Paige Leuthold________________________________ Name of Lesson _____Stem and Leaf Plots____________________________________ Subject ____Mathematics_____________________ Grade __4th__________________ Rationale for lesson: Stem and Leaf plots are an option when displaying and interpreting data. It can be used later in mathematics studies.

Learning outcomes: Students will generate a stem and leaf plot. Students will find mean, median, and mode using stem and leaf plots.

Assessment of student outcomes: Students will be assessed based upon participation and teacher observation. Students will also be assessed upon completion of stem and leaf plot notes.

Related Foundations/Indiana Academic Standard: MA.4.6 2000 - Data Analysis and Probability Students organize, represent, and interpret numerical and categorical data and clearly communicate the findings. They show outcomes for simple probability situations. Materials Needed: Pencil Paper Whiteboard/chalkboard Dry erase marker/chalk Lesson/Activity Presentation: Anticipatory set: Introduce stem and leaf plots to students. Let the students know that it will be an easy way to find mean, median, mode, etc (review terms if necessary). Introduce new vocabulary

Stem-and-Leaf plot: a graph that uses the digits of each number to show the shape of the data. Stem: digit or digits on the left Leaf: digit or digits on the right Teaching procedures. Teacher will write a series of numbers on the board. The teacher explains the steps to creating a stem and leaf plot. Step one: circle the stem (the number in the highest place value). Step two: Place the stems in a vertical line in numerical order and draw a vertical line next to the right of the stems. Step three: underline the leaves (the smaller place values) and place them next to the appropriate stem. Step four: order the leaves from least to greatest. Students should record all of this in their math notes.

Guided and Independent Practice: Do an example of a stem and leaf plot with the students that include numbers with more than two digits. Have students find mean, median, mode, max, min, etc using the stem and leaf plot and have the class complete three plots finding each the previous on each one. Have students give a thumbs up or down for understanding. Have students whose birthdays are January-June choose a two digit number from 1-50 on a piece of paper. Students with birthdays July-December choose a two digit number from 51-99 on a piece of paper. Students will tear the paper where the stem meets the leaf. On the board will be the different stems. Students will come up one at a time and put their leaves on the correct stem and in the correct numerical order. If it is incorrect, ask the students if we are finished, prompt them to realize the numbers arent in order. Students should record plot in their notes. Closure: Collect stem and leaf plot notes for checking. Differentiated instruction: For lower level students, give them a different color for each stem. For example, any number that was in the 20s would be red, any number in the 30s would be blue, and any number in the 40s would be green. Then have them create the stem and leaf plot.
