Semantic Studies
Mieke Miryanti A lecturer at English Department, Politeknik Negeri Bandung Abstract: The purpose of this paper entitled -ly Disjuncts and -ly Conjuncts in the English Clauses: Syntactic and Semantic Studies is to describe the -ly adverbs which are on the basis of both semantic and syntactic criteria. The English learners will find out functions, positions, and meanings of these -ly adverbs. The other benefit is to give a clearer description to the readers on how to use -ly adverbs. The primary data are taken from novel Fires on the Plain (1967) by Shoehei Ooka. The method used to analyze the data is descriptive. The data are classified and analyzed based on the theories of Quirk, et al (1972) and Greenbaum (1969). To support the study the writer also uses Quirk and Greenbaum method, namely Paraphrase The result of this analysis shows that disjunct adverbial which is divided into two subclasses, style disjuncts and content disjuncts appearing most naturally at the beginning of the sentence can be found in not only middle but also end position. While for conjuncts, the data show that initial position, indeed, is the favored position for them and just listing and resultive found in this novel.
