Introduction I have experience administering the Battelle Developmental Inventory-II (BDI-II) evaluation with three to five year olds; however, I have little experience doing so with children under three. As a Part C service coordinator at MidCoast Regional Child Development Services (MRCDS), I do not administer BDI-IIs with children; however, as a 282 certified special educator trained to use this evaluation, I am able to do so. Since assuming this role I have administered a BDI-II twice when other evaluators were unavailable; however, did not feel entirely confident either time as I do not have a great deal of experience doing so with children under three. I prepared myself well, administered it well, asked question when needed be, and checked my results and scores thrice with each evaluation. I was also given complimentary feedback from my evaluation partner each time. That being said, I still feel the need to gain more experience with doing this, so that if and when the time comes I am able to do so with more confidence and expertise. Evaluation #1 The fourth activity outlined in my IPP is to administer at least one BDI-II during this practicum. I have decided I would like to do more than one because I administered one yesterday, and feel the need to reflect on what went well, and not so well, then use that reflective thinking to feel more confident in another administration of it. (The reflection of the second BDI-II can be found in my reflective journal.) Our administrations of the BDI-II are done in multidisciplinary teams, as outlines by federal

regulations. Yesterday I completed the evaluation with the Occupational Therapist (OT) on our team; I was responsible for the communication and cognitive sections. For the two other evaluations with children under three I completed, I was responsible for the other three sections, motor, personal-social, and adaptive. I found the communication and cognitive sections of the BDI-II to be more difficult to complete than the other three. Perhaps this is because I have no experience with it, and perhaps they just are more difficult. Considering I had not previously administered these particular sections of the BDI-II with a child under three, I felt it went okay. As a service coordinator, I am now required to attend all evaluations with the two evaluators. Therefore, for the past several months I have been observing the administration of the BDI-II. This was certainly to my benefit, and I was able to flow through the structured items a bit based on watching the Speech and Language Pathologists (SLPs) in the evaluations I now attend. I could certainly tell though, that my flow was not nearly as smooth as theirs, which I do understand comes with experience. A crucial aspect of the evaluation I need to work toward more in the future is preparation. Although I prepared for 45 minutes, I did not feel as though that was enough. I marked where the pages were in the books so I could easily find my starting point. I also read through the questions in the age section, as well as the one above and below. For the next evaluation, I plan spend more time preparing in different ways. One thing I plan to do is to write in my test booklet small hints about items; therefore, hopefully reducing the need to search and read the booklet while administering it in order to find out, say, how long a child needs to attend to peek-a-boo. This took a considerable amount of time during the evaluation, and I would often lose the childs

attention. I would also like to map out which items I need what materials for. I felt as though I was unorganized during yesterdays evaluations, and was continually uncertain of what materials I needed when. I will also clearly mark which items are interview and observation versus structured. I am looking forward to using this reflection to administer a BDI-II that feels more organized.
