Lesson/Activity Plan Template Teacher Candidate ________Paige Leuthold Name of Lesson ________Graduated Cylinder. Subject _____Science______ Grade ____4_____

Rationale for lesson: Graduated cylinders are used in advanced science lessons.

Learning outcomes: Students will measure the volumes of various sized marbles Students will record data of each marble Assessment of student outcomes: Students will be assessed based on the completion and accuracy of each marbles volume Related Foundations/Indiana Academic Standard: Process Standard: Perform investigations using appropriate tools and technologies that will extend the senses Materials Needed: Water Graduated cylinders Various sized marbles Lesson/Activity Presentation: Anticipatory set: Previously learned how to find volume using length times width times height, but what about spherical items? How do you find the volume of a marble? Thats where a graduated cylinder comes in. It uses water to determine the volume Teaching procedures: Give each student or group of students a graduated cylinder and a cup of water. Also hand out various marbles. Instruct the students to fill the graduated cylinder up to a certain, easy to remember line, such as 10 ml. Once that is done students will put a marble in the cylinder and record where the water line is. Subtract the initial volume (10 ml) from the final volume and you have the volume of marble. The students should do at least 10 different marbles and record their data Guided & independent practice: Do an example as a class for demonstration and be available for help if needed. Students should work independently

Leuthold2 Closure: Students should write about it in their journals and ask any questions they may have. Possibly discuss other objects you could find volume with using a graduated cylinder. Differentiated instruction: Students can be grouped according to learning and/or behavioral needs.

Technology (if appropriate): N/A

Reflection on lesson: Yet to be determined.
