World Culture

Culture can be said to be the accumulated beliefs, values, religion, art and way of life of other people. Teaching children about world culture helps them appreciate the differences in people and their traditions. When they understand someones reasons for how they behave, they are less likely to take offense. In addition, teaching young children about different cultures promotes a fun and exciting learning environment. A recent Survey report conducted by the national geographic society showed a decline in multicultural awareness. Hence, this project is designed for 5th graders of Widener Partnership Charter School (after school program). The students will be introduced to a new experience of learning world Culture while participating in various interactive activities.

Objectives 1. Students will have an understanding of other cultures. 2. Students will be able to describe what culture means. 3. They will understand how other cultures interact and communicate with each other and across the country. 4. They will understand how people react when they are within a new terrain. 5. They will learn arts, craft, music and various foods from other countries. 6. They will learn about religion and fashion of other cultures.

Activities There are different activities available to help educate the children; this project will be exploring the following:

1. The use of a map to locate various countries-The use of maps and globes enables children to understand where they live and where other places in the world are located.

2. Countries name game: The students will participate in various games that will help them Develop a mental map of countries, capitals, and geography.,

3. Video clips of geographical areas of different countries: this is an interesting means of seeing what other countries of the world look like.

4. Sing along greetings: They will be able to understand greetings and how they are pronounced through music.

5. Making variety of foods and snacks-The student will have the opportunity of making and eating snacks made by them. This is another form of learning what other cultures eat, when and how they eat various foods.

6. Display of arts and crafts from other countries-different countries are identified by different arts and crafts. The 5th graders will take part in exhibiting some of the arts and crafts from other counties.

7. Music from other countries-The class will participate in listening and dancing to music from other parts of the world. 8. Learning about different religion: Religion education will enable the students learn about other religion and how they practice.

9. Economic status of different countries: A brief aspect of economy status will also be taught. 10. Fashion show: This will be the grand finale of the world culture education. Students will participate in a fashion show by showcasing different cloths and designs from other countries. Also, it will be an avenue to display food, arts and crafts from other nations.

OUTCOMES 1. Creating and implementing a successful project. 2. Gaining new skills, knowledge while establishing a work relationship in the human service field. 3. Gaining more exposure in the human service field.

4. An opportunity to instill a lifelong education in the minds of the students. 5. Contributing knowledge and values to the students.

Summarily, the students will be knowledgeable about different cultures, belief, values, and religion of other people. This will help build confidence in interacting with other people from different backgrounds.
