Iwouldliketostartbyintroducingmyself.MynameisTszChingChanandIhavecomefroma journeyofeightthousandmilestotheUnitedStatesforschool.Havingbornandraisedinacountrylike HongKongmadeithardformetogetusedtothiscollegetown.HongKongislocatedattheotherside oftheworld,anditisfamousforitsnightlife.IfIhavetodescribeit,IwouldsayitisjustlikeNewYork aplacefulloffantasyandadventure.Theweatherinmyhometownisratherwarmandhumid comparingtoBoston,butthepassionateofthepeopleinBostonhavealwaysmeltedmyheart.They makemefeellikethereisstillwarmtheventhoughthetemperatureislikenegativetendegreecelsius. IamaCommunicationStudiesmajorstudent,Ireallylikehowcommunicationshelptopull peoplecloserandcometogethertocreateculturalchange.Ourworldneedsthesemeaningful communicationsforimprovements.Thisisexactlyhowthetermpostmodernismwouldhavecome from.Themovementhappenedinlate20thcentury,peopleworktogetherandsharedifferentopinions andideasoftheirthoughts.Throughcommunicating,peoplestartedtohaveskepticalinterpretationsof arts,cultures,history,literature,andsoon.Alloftheirideascontributedtothesuccessofour21st century.ThisisalsooneofthereasonswhyIhavecomeallthewayforcollege.IhopethatIcould bringmyculturetotheotherpartoftheworldandenhanceeffectiveandmeaningfulconversationsin ordertocreatechanges.Andbyinvestigatingintothissubject,Ifoundoutthatthereareseveralforms ofcommunicationthatactasmediumsforpeopletounderstandmoreabouteachother.Forexample, thereareverbalversusnonverbalcommunication,virtualversusinpersoncommunication,etc.Through theseplatforms,peopleconsciouslyandunconsciouslyexpresstheirfeelingsandemotionsandcreate culturalchange.NortheasternUniversitygrantsstudentstheopportunitytoexplorerealworldsituations underitsprotection.Itwidenstheirhorizonsineveryaspectsbyprovidingawiderangeofcoursesand itswellknowncoopprogram.Eventually,studentsseektheirownmeaningsinregardsof

postmodernism. Communicationdoesnotjustbringustogether,italsohelpspreventmisunderstandings,and sometimeshelponetosolveproblemsthroughseekingadvices.TherearecertainprinciplesinlifethatI wouldliketosharethatImostlybaseon.IbelievethatNothingWorthHavingComesEasy, therefore,IthinkthatTheGreatestPleasureInLifeIsDoingWhatPeopleSayYouCannotDo. Havingthesetwophilosophiesinmindencouragemetocommunicatewithpeopleandovercomeany difficultiesaheadofme.Beingbornastheonlychildinthefamily,somemayassumethatitwillbehard formetogetalongwithothersandconcentrateinCommunicationsStudiessinceIdonothaveany siblingsaspractice.Ihaveadifferentviewaboutthisissue.Idonotbelievethatonesfamily backgroundshapeshisorherbehavior,insteaditisthepersonalityofapersonwhichaddstoit.Isee myselfhavingastrongpersonality,therefore,anythingthatappealschallengingwouldhaveinterested me.AndIhavechosentotakecommunicationinordertoprepareforeverybattlethatIhadfaced,that IamfacingandthatIwillface.ThereisasayingbySunTzuinTheArtofWar,Ifyouknowtheenemy andknowyourself,youneednotfeartheresultofahundredbattles.Ifyouknowyourselfbutnotthe enemy,foreveryvictorygainedyouwillalsosufferadefeat.Ifyouknowneithertheenemynor yourself,youwillsuccumbineverybattle.Therefore,throughworkinginthefieldofcommunication,I haveknownbothmyselfandmyenemiesbettertoconquereverywarthatwouldhavebeeninfront ofme. Ihavemultipleinspirations,butallofthemleadtooneultimategoalhappiness.Somepeople worktenhoursadayinordertohaveabetterliving,athleticstrainalldayandnighttogetintofinals, singleskeepgoingouttoseekforlove,etc.Andattheendoftheday,whatexactlyaretheylooking for?Theanswertothatquestionishappiness.EverythingthatIhavebeendoingsincethreeyearold

untilnowistogetreadyformyfuture,tohelpmewalkmypatheasier.Accordingtothebook HappierbyTalBenShahar,workwithoutmeaningisonlyajobbutnotcareer.Hence,itwillnot satisfyapersonsneedandimproveonesqualityoflife.Thesametheoryappliestomystudy. Therefore,IchoseCommunicationStudiesasmymajornotbecauseIcangetthemostoutofitand makethemostprofitbyhavingaPublicRelationsjob.ItisbecauseIloveit.Ienjoycommunicatingwith people.Ilikehowwecanreadapersonsmindthroughhisorherfacialexpressionsorbody movements.Ibelievethateachandeveryoneofuswanttodosomethingthatmakeourselveshappy.I amhappywithwhatIamdoingnow,therefore,Iamnotlucky,Iamblessed.
