Issued: 29th May 2009 Due date: 2nd June 2009 at 12h30 Tutorial #3 Equilibrium and Structures Total marks: 40 IMPORTANT NOTICES: Write neatly and legibly, as illegible work will not be considered for marks. If you are of the opinion that insufficient information was provided to solve a specific problem, make realistic assumptions, motivate these and continue solving the problem based on your assumptions made. Use F.B.Ds and illustrative diagrams wherever possible. Clearly show the reference Cartesian axes system used for each question. Pay attention to units and show the relevant unit in each calculated answer. No marks will be awarded for answers only. Calculations must contain a minimum number of logically sequenced steps followed by an answer. In cases where two or more different - and undeleted answers are given for the same item, the right answer will not be considered for marks. Use gravitational acceleration g = 9.81m/s2. Answer all questions.

Question 1 [Centre of mass/centroid - continuums]. Determine the x and y coordinates of the centroid of the shaded area shown in Figure Q1 [8].

Figure Q1.

Question 2 [Centre of mass/centroid - continuums]. Show by integration that the z coordinate to the centroid of the right circular cone 3h (Figure Q2) is given by z = [8]. 4

Figure Q2.

Question 3 [Centre of mass/centroid - composites]. Determine the coordinates of the centroid of the plane area shown in Figure Q3 with reference to the coordinate system shown and taking x = 10 mm [7].

Question 4 [Second moment of area - continuums]. Determine the moments of inertia of the shaded area about the x and y axes and about its centroidal axis y using the parallel axis theorem [9].

Figure Q4.

Question 5 [Second moment of area - composites]. Determine the polar moment of inertia about the centroidal axes (x, y) of the H-beam shown in Figure Q5. Also determine the radii of gyration with respect to both the x and y axes [8].
