EDUC 328: The Teaching of Reading (Mini Lesson) Name: Alycia Moore-Smith PART I: PLANNING Title of Lesson Date: April 7, 2014

Source Subject Area (s)

Mini Murder Mystery - (Determining Slope ) Is this lesson original idea? If not, from what source did I borrow this lesson? http://www.sharemylesson.com/mypublicprofile.aspx?uc=2386411 Mathematics - Algebra 7th grade

Grade Level 7-3.2 Analyze tables and graphs to describe the rate of change between and among quantities. 7-3.3 Understand slope as a constant rate of change. Describe the lessons activities and content to provide a clear overview of the lesson. A murder has been committed! There are 32 suspects; and one of them is guilty. Using your powers of deduction; can you crack each of the five coded clues to reveal the identity of the killer? Students will work in groups to complete Mini Murder worksheet; the first group to finish and answer correctly will be rewarded with homework passes. What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson? Make sure that your objective(s) are measurable. Students will be able to demonstrate understanding of proportional relationships. How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material? I will work with these students individually or have them pair with a student who has already mastered the concept. (reciprocal teaching) How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept? I will provide these students with early-finishers work or have them work with students who do not understand the material. How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English? I will work with these students individually; before, during, between and after classes. I will also offer help to the students; ELL programs, etc.

Anticipatory Set

Why is it important for the students to learn this content? The idea of slope is something you encounter often in everyday life. Think about rolling a cart down a ramp or climbing a set of stairs. Both the ramp and the stairs have slope. You can describe slope, or steepness, of the ramp and stairs by considering horizontal and vertical movement along them. In conversation, you use words like gradual or steep to describe slope. For example, Along a gradual slope, most of the movement is horizontal, Along a steep slope, the vertical movement is greater. What materials and supplies are needed to help your students achieve the stated objectives? What will the teacher need? What will the students need? What other resources are needed? Will you use resource speakers? Students will need: Pencil Paper Teacher will need: Activity worksheets/handouts Dry erase board Dry erase markers Paper Pencil/Pen What will you do to motivate the students and get their attention? What is the hook that will serve as a focus for the lessons activities? I will have students skim through the worksheet to find words they know and know not know, then I will review with students key terms such as slope, perpendicular, gradual and intercept by having the students assist me with developing a KWL chart.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION How will I find out what students already know about this topic? I will review with students key terms such as slope, perpendicular, gradual and intercept by having the students assist me with developing a KWL chart. What will I do to show students what is expected? In order for students to know what is expected form this lesson; I will clearly go over model all directions. What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task? Students will work in groups to complete the first portion of the worksheets What questions will you ask to determine if students understand so far? What techniques or strategies will be used to determine if students understand so far? In order to check for understanding, I will review the lesson with the students engaging them in an open-ended discussion on their predictions and conclusions.

Closure

What will students do by themselves to show that they have internalized the knowledge? Students will work by themselves to complete the second potion of the worksheet. How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences? How will you wrap up the lesson to reinforce concepts taught during the lesson? I will wrap the lesson up by praising those students who finished first or made the correct predictions as to who committed the murder. I will ask question to make sure students comprehend & strongly urge them to study their notes for any upcoming tests or quizzes. What will students do to demonstrate what they have learned? Students will work in groups to complete Mini Murder lesson. What can students do at home or in the classroom to apply the knowledge or skills? How could you use your colleagues or community agencies to improve student performance? I will have students create their own examples, as well as copy their classmates examples in their journals for future references.
