Roles in physical activity and sport


The different roles that can be experienced in sport include:

Player/Performer

Organiser

Miss Tears could provide opportunities for the girls at Westshore High School to experience each of these roles in PE lessons.

Discuss the qualities the girls would need to carry out each of these roles, and the duties each role involves.

Individual factors affecting performance


Age: Strength, stamina, speed and flexibility all decrease with age.
How will these affect the Westshore Club players during a game?

Body Type: Endomorph wide hips and shoulders Mesomorph muscular build Ectomorph light frame and little muscle and fat
Which body type would the Westshore players need and why?

Individual factors affecting performance


Culture: Where someone lives may affect their level of participation in sport.
If Westshore Netball Club is trying to recruit new players, how may the culture in which someone lives reduce the opportunities for new players to join the club?

Use the Internet to find out where religious beliefs have prevented an individual from participating in sport. Focus on the problems experienced by female performers.

Environment
Weather can affect participation and performance in sport. Discuss the different types of weather conditions that may force Westshore Netball Club to have to cancel their matches.

Activity Levels and Needs


The members of Westshore Netball Club may choose to play for enjoyment rather than winning trophies. What other benefits might the players gain from playing for the team?

Risk and Challenge


Miss Tears would need to carry out a risk assessment before PE lessons. Discuss the different factors she would need to consider.

The demands of performance


Fatigue: extreme tiredness caused by excessive exercise Discuss how fatigue may be contributing towards the Westshore team conceding late goals.
Stress: How the body reacts to a change may depend on personality type:

introvert shy, quiet, prefers individual sports

extrovert outgoing, confident, prefers team sports

Stress can cause tension and anxiety which may affect performance. Why might the players be suffering from stress, and how could that be affecting their performance in matches?

Injury:
internal caused by the performer, e.g. overuse or sudden movement

external caused by other factors, e.g. impact injuries, incorrect actions What are the different injuries the Westshore players may experience when they are taking part in matches?

Aerobic respiration where energy is produced in the presence of oxygen

Anaerobic respiration where energy is produced in the absence of oxygen

Discuss why the Westshore players would use both types of respiration during a game. Give specific examples.

Leisure Time Free time to choose what you want to do can be active or passive:
active aerobics, walking

Recreation Time spent relaxing can still be active. Age may be an important factor in the choice of recreational activities a person chooses to do.

This was introduced to improve childrens health and achievement. It has four themes: PSHE Healthy eating Physical activity Emotional health and well-being
If Miss Tears teaches about healthy eating to her students, what sort of advice can she give about diet about the importance of a balanced diet? What are the seven nutrients? Give examples of foods from each nutrient.
