I will write two sentences on the board that do not include a helping verb. I will ask the students if the sentences sound correct. When they answer I will ask them to correct me and tell me what is missing. I will ask what kinds of words these are. I will then tell them that some verbs need help. I will then introduce helping verbs.
8. Instructional Plan:
Students will take out their writing notebook to write down what a helping verb is. o Helping verbs work with the main verb to tell about the action. Usually, they give the reader more detail about when the action takes place. o A verb cannot be a helping verb unless there is another verb to help. Together, the main verb and its helping verb are called a verb phrase.
I will then tell students there are 23 helping verbs. They will have the acronym on the poster to refer to but I will also pass out a worksheet for students to have. I will then play the youtube clip for the students and we can sing it together and they will gain more familiarity with the
helping verbs. I will then have the students return to their desks to complete a worksheet where they underline and identify the helping verbs in each sentence. We will then go over this as a class. I will then give them another worksheet where they will fill in the blanks and create their own sentences. We will go over this as a class. 9. Closure: We will review the helping verbs once more. I will ask them if there are any questions.
