Auletto Date that lesson was taught:4/11/2014

Standards in 2 Domains: Cognition and General Knowledge Science Science Inquiry and Application Inquiry Make Predictions Physical Well-Being and Motor Development Motor Development Small Muscle - Use classroom and household tools independently with eye-hand coordination to carry out activities. Instructional objectives: list 2observable/measurable objectives for this lesson. Use precise language w/ action verbs. The student will be able to: 1. Verbally make predictions about what will happen over the weekend to their soil jars. 2. Use classroom materials to pour water into jars, secure lids, and write initials on lid.

Experiences: Describe authentic (real life, hands-on not representational) materials and enticing/ creative experiences in
which children are actively engaged. Safety should be addressed if warranted.

1. During small group time, the students will receive their previously collected soil samples (now in jars). The teacher will ask them to remember where they got the soil and what they saw around it. 2. After the student answers, the teacher will explain that soil is made up of lots of different types of materials from nature. Explain that the students will be adding water to their soil samples and leaving them over night. 3. Ask the students to guess what will happen after the soil sits in the jar with water overnight. Record their predictions on chart paper. 4. Have the students get a Dixie cup full of water and slowly pour it into their soil jar. Have them secure the lids with tape and write their initials on the lid. Record if they are able to do this independently or need assistance. 5. Set the jars off to the side and leave them over the weekend. When they come back to school, they will be able to observe the layers of particles in the soil and see that it is made up of many types of natural materials. They can share their observations with the teacher, who will record their observations again. Authentic Materials: soil, water Other Materials: jars, cups to pour water, tape, markers Safety: Make sure that the students do not consume any of the soil and keep their hands clean after handling the soil from outside. Evidence of student learning: Student learning will be collected through the transcribed student predictions and photographs of the activities. The data will be compiled in a whole-class tracking sheet.
