Module 8

Many people believe that political correctness is being taken too far just because they refuse to see the real reasons behind this movement. They say that PC language is watering the language down and think that nobody should tell people to change the way they speak. In my opinion, it's not important for them to think about how we talk to people or how we describe people. Perhaps they don't realise that, too often, the language we use is inappropiate and disrespectful, or they don't believe that, for example, bothering or whistling at women who walk past are perfect examples of sexual harassment, and making racist jokes is offensive behaviour. Well, what those people should know is that if we change the language, we can change everything: this seems to be the goal of the PC movement. As someone once said: "We live in a society made up of just one race". Unfortunately there are still too many others who entirely disagree with this opinion, don't think that we are all equal and simply laugh at the new politically correct words. They are the ones who don't use or accept terms like "partner" or "disabled people". The problem is that they will never consider other people's feelings, will never show any kindness to animals and will never be aware of their own sexism, racism, impoliteness and rudeness. In other words, they are the people who don't want to contribute to a better world. Questions: 1. According to many people, what's wrong with politically correct language?

2. According to the writer, what's wrong with the way we usually speak?

3. What two examples of offensive behaviour towards women does the writer give?

4. According to the writer, what is the main objective of this movement?

5. According to the writer, how do some people react to the term "disabled people"?
