Open House
Open House is on Monday, August 4th this year at 6:30pm, and I am very excited to meet the parents of my wonderful students, just as I am sure you are glad to meet me. I will have more information about me and my policies in a printed packet for you at Open House. I am a filing fiend, so I appreciate making paperwork available to everyone. In this packet, you will receive an extra copy of just about every piece of paperwork and form I send out in Tuesday Folders for the entire year. Also, forms I send home will be available on blackboard and my class website. If you cant find it after that, give me a phone call! I want to make sure that you, as parents, are as comfortable and informed as possible and are not inconvenienced in any way on my behalf. Feel free to ask any questions that night and I will be happy to answer them.

Student Mentor Program

Starting off as a high school English assignment, what once was Reading Buddies, has now blossomed into a Student Mentor Program at Florida State University School. Three years ago, Mrs. Wilson, the new English teacher at Florida High, heard rounds of applause for Reading Buddies (started by the now retired Mr. Stinch). Though she had never seen it in action, her group of students wanted the same experience others before them had. This student mentor program three years later is now a growing club with almost 50 high school students taking part. Your child now has the opportunity, once they reach 3rd grade, to join the elementary school half of the Student Mentor Program. If you want your child to participate, there is a permission slip and information regarding orientation in this Tuesdays packet. Please get it signed and turned in by the date on the form. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to call Mrs. Wilson. Her contact information is listed at the bottom of the permission slip and below for your convenience.

This mentor program is used as a way to connect older students to younger students, changing the outlook of both individuals. All mentors are background checked and thoroughly monitored by Mrs. Wilson, the Mentor Program Sponsor.

Miss Ryals Test Policy

I understand that tests are not the most fun part of a students daily life. I strive to make them as painless as possible. At most, I only give 1 or 2 tests and 1 pop quiz per week. Every other Monday is our Math, History, Science, and Language Arts rotation test day. What this means is, every other Monday your child will have a test. This test will either cover Math, History, Science, or Language Arts. I do this so that students don't get bogged down with two tests to study for in one weekend. This also gives them incentive to pass their spelling pretest, so that extra study time is available for Math, History, Science, or Language Arts. Spelling tests can be a doozy for some students and a breeze for others. In my class, we do a pretest on Thursdays. If your child makes a 100% on the pretest, that Friday they can take a break in the reading nook while the rest of the students take the test. This gives students who do not pass the pretest, another opportunity to make a higher grade. Whichever grade is higher goes in the grade book for that test. This policy rewards those who study and gives students who don't, an incentive to do so. If you have any questions about this, refer to the detailed version of my testing policy in the packet, or ask me via email or office call.

Field Trip

The first field trip we will take this year is to the Lake Jackson Mounds. This is a Native American artifact that I am sure all of the 3rd grade classes are excited to attend. These mounds were built by the Lake Jackson Indian tribe a long time ago. Before touring and climbing to the top of the mounds, we will also play some games the Native Americans might have played when they were inhabiting this region of Florida. There is also a mini museum and a short video that we will watch about the

mounds and how they got where they are today. Tennis shoes and long or short hiking pants will be required. The mosquitos will be lurking, so keep this in mind if you have sensitive skin. Bug spray will be provided courtesy of Ms. Hunter. The best way to keep away any poison ivy/oak or mosquitos is by wearing longer pants or socks that hit above the ankle. This is sure to be great learning experience and a lot of fun for the students and any chaperones that attend.

personal goal of 70 pounds. We have until the end of the school year to achieve this goal. The class that collects the most will get an end of the year ice cream party.

EXTRA CREDIT QUESTION!!!

GREEN
Plants need energy from which 3 elements listed below to make their own food?
Check the 3 that apply.

We will be collecting
Plastic bottles must hold LESS THAN 3 gallons (please wash out first) Soda bottles, shampoo bottles, water jugs/ water bottles, peanut butter jars, detergent bottles, yogurt cups, lotion bottles. Every year 3rd grade takes part in the school recycling project. The FSUS elementary schools goal this year is 800 pounds of recycled goods. Third grade is responsible for collecting at least 150 pounds. Since there are 3 third grade classes, we are each responsible for 50 pounds per class. Ms. Hunter and Mr. Broomes classes are also responsible for 50 pounds. Because we are going super green this year, and we have the advantage of having 5 more students than the other classes, we are setting a
