Learning Objective: Students will correctly identify and count coins to solve word problems with at least 88% accuracy. Alignment with Standards: 2.MD.C.8 Solve word problems involving dollar bills, quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies, using $ and cents symbols appropriately. Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections:
At this age students have previously been introduced to coins and their values and have had practice identifying and finding the value of multiple coins. In second grade, students continue to add to their knowledge of coins as they begin solving word problems with coins. Students will apply reading skills while solving problems as they have to be able to understand what the question is asking to be able to solve it. They also have to be able to pull out the important parts of the question to know what steps to take to solve it. Money is a skill that relates to SC state standards in social studies (Standard 2-3) which involves understanding goods, services, supply, and demand. As students gain understanding of how money is used they understand how money is used to buy goods.

Lesson Objective(s) Assessment(s) of the Objective(s) Pre-Assessment: Students will practice counting money at the beginning of the lesson using money sticks. The teacher will walk around the room as students count several different money sticks. Students will record their answers on their whiteboards. This will be a warm-up activity in order to see how much she needs to review from the previous day before beginning the new lesson. During-Assessment: Students will have the opportunity to come up to the board during whole-group instruction, answer questions, and work on their individual white boards. Through questioning and the students participation in the lesson the teacher will determine the students understanding of counting Use of Formative Assessment Teacher will use the formative assessment to determine whether or not the students need more practice with counting money or if she can move forward to solving harder, two-step problems involving money. She will also use the assessment to identify which students may need help identifying coins from the word problems. Prior to this lesson students have had practice with counting coins placed in front of them. Students have not had much practice with money in word problems at this point.

Post-Assessment: Below Average students: Students will complete six word problems where the coins will already be provided on the handout in order from greatest value to least value. Average students: Students will complete a handout where coins are already provided with the word problems but are in no certain order. Above average students: Students will complete a handout where coins will not be provided. They will have to draw in the coins to solve the word problems by counting money. *All students will be challenged to write their own word problem for question 6.

Accommodations: Students will use manipulatives to help them create word problems with coins. The handout for the below average students will be modified in that the coins will already be drawn on the handout for each problem. The coins will also already be placed in order from greatest value to least value. The teacher will read the word problems to the students that have difficulty with comprehending what the question is asking. The handout for the average students will have coins drawn on them, but the coins will not be placed in order so the students will have to work to rearrange the coins. The above average students will be given handouts where they have to draw in the coins in order to solve the problems or simply count plastic coins in their heads. All students will be challenged to create a word problem of their own after solving their five word problems. Above average students will pair up with below average students to help solve problems if necessary. Students that finish early will work with a partner to solve each others word problems. Materials: Money Song and Poems Money Sticks (popsicle sticks with various amount of coins on them) Manipulatives (one bag of coins for each child) White boards (one per child) Dry Erase markers SMART board Hairy Money Anchor Chart Money Word Problems on the SMART board (money tools) Above Average, Average, and Below Average Handouts

Procedures: 1. Teacher will review coin values with the class by reciting money value poems and song. 2. Class will review in a whole-group setting counting coins. Each child will be given a money stick that contains a different value. Students will record their answers on their white boards. 3. Students will pass the money sticks so that they have a different money stick. This will continue until the teacher feels the students have reviewed enough to move on. 4. Teacher will guide the students in solving word problems as a class using the money tools on the SMART board. 5. Teacher will pair students up and they will work to solve word problems. The teacher will go over the answers by having students coming up to the SMART board to demonstrate and talk about how they got their answers. 6. Students will work individually to solve six word problems where they will identify coins and figure out the total value of the coins. References:
