Key Words: fear of commitment, commitment phobia, emotionally unavailable, commitment and fear, romantic commitment, marriage and commitment, parenting and commitment, fear and attachment, childhood and commitment, commitmentphobia I chose this topic because a lot of my friends always talk about their boyfriends being afraid of commitment. We would always sit around and ask why and why we would put up with them acting like this. So I decided to do my research project to help them understand a little better, because all girls have been in a relationship where they want the man to commit but he just isnt ready. When I began researching this topic the first keyword I used was fear of commitment. That brought up the most information. The more sources that I located, the more key words I came up with. I even found words that were meant to give a diagnosis to people who fear commitment. This helped me find all my sources and will help me write my paper. 2. Concept Map

Synthesis/ Analysis: In todays times, it is common to hear someone say they are afraid

of commitment. At my age, it is hard to find people who are willing to commit. Most people are afraid of losing their freedom and do not want to think that far into the future (Morvay). So for my project, I wanted to explore the reasons why so many people are afraid to commit to someone. Some experts say that many people do not want to commit because of their personality types (Attachment Style). A person that prefers to be alone instead of being with a group of people is sometimes looped into this category of people who are afraid of commitment. Just like they are afraid to open themselves up to a group of friends, they are afraid to open up to another person, especially when this person has the potential to share their life with them (Attachment Style). Others may be afraid to commit because they have been previously hurt in the past. Anger and fear from past relationships may harm the potential of future relationships. This is a big reason why people are afraid to recommit to another person (Ming-Hong, Tsai, and Young). Fear is a big reason why many people are afraid to commit (Morvay). Most people like to know what is going to happen. When you commit to someone, they have the potential to harm you in ways you do not expect. Fear of the unknown and fear of losing their independence and freedom can keep a person from committing. People who are afraid of committing often have an exaggerated fear of commitment (Carter, Steven, and Sokol). They believe that committing themselves means giving themselves up completely which is not true. You do not have to give up boys night or girls night out just because you are committed to someone. If the partner looks at it from the other persons point of view, then making a commitment is easier (Morvay). Carter, Steven and Sokol argue that if you are in a relationship where one person can not

commit then you should let them go (205). Yangki Akiteng argues that you can work through your fear of commitment problems if you can recognize that you do have a problem! Fear of commitment is about working with your partner. Fear of commitment can be worked through and overcome as long as that person wants to overcome the obstacle (Akiteng)!
