Source: Everyday Math Activity 4.14 "What's My Rule?" Fishing Game Grade/Level Kindergarten KEY CONCEPTS & STANDARDS Big Idea & Essential Questions Student have been working with patterns and sorting shapes. Later they will be able to identify and invent their own sorting rules. This introduction to rules will help students understand how rules are used in algebraic funtions. Some questions to ask during the lesson include; What sort of fish am I fishing for? What's my fishing rule? What is the same about students I caught?
Learning Outcome(s) To introduce a game that helps children to think about sorting rules. Summary Standards CA- California Common Core State Standards (2012) Subject: Mathematics Grade: Kindergarten Domain: Geometry K.G Area: Identify and describe shapes (squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, hexagons, cubes, cones, cylinders, and spheres). Standard: 2. Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. Area: Analyze, compare, create, and compose shapes. Standard: 4. Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/"corners) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length). ASSESSMENTS Assessment/Rubrics Students will first watch the teacher fish for rule/attrubutes and will guess what kind of fish the teacher is looking for. They will do this by raising a quiet hand. When students are ready, students will take turn chooing their own rule/attributes as the fishperson. The teacher will assess students by their ability to guess the rule or attribute and if they can apply that and come up with their own rule. MATERIALS AND RESOURCES Instructional Materials & Technology (handouts, etc.) No materials needed. IMPLEMENTATION Sequence of Activities 1. The teacher will tell the class that they are going to pretend to fish and they are going to become fishperson. Page 1 of 2 2. Next, The teacher will explain that she will catch one kind of fish at a time with one attribute (Go over definition of attribute). 3. Students will watch the teacher fish and try to guess what type of fish you are looking for. 4. The teacher will fish for attrubutes like that same colored shirt, a particular type of shoe, etc. 5. After picking many different attributes the students will then take turns being the fishperson. Grouping Strategies This will be a whole group lesson that is interactive. Differentiated Instruction Some mathematical terms will be reviwed inculding; rule and attribute. REFLECTIONS Prior to Lesson Post-Lesson Page 2 of 2
