(Open Replicator) is a non-disruptive, fast, simple, and open migration and data mobility application that enables organizations to better manage and utilize their vast quantities of critical information. Open Replicators unique architecture uses the high-performance capabilities of the Symmetrix array to pull data from other EMC or qualified third-party arrays or push data to other arrays, utilizing an organiza- tions existing SAN/WAN infrastructure. With the addition of Federated Live Migration, all migrations to a Symmetrix VMAX
system are completely non-disruptive at the storage and
host/application level. For those organizations that leverage virtual and thin technologies, Open Replicator can quickly and easily reclaim a volumes allocated, but unused, capacity during a migration process with a zero space reclaim feature. Highly flexibleOpen Replicator supports a large number of deployment options for maximum configuration flexibility: hot and cold push along with hot and cold pull all between any combination of EMC arrays and qualified third-party systems. Non-disruptiveFederated Live Migration enables applications to remain online, servicing users throughout the entire migration process. VirtualizedWith full support for thick-to-thin, thin-to-thin, and thick-to-thick migrations, Open Replicator is a great tool to move into a virtualized and thinly provisioned environment. Space savingsZero space reclaim enables a system to reclaim a migrated volumes allo- cated but unused capacity as it arrives at the new Symmetrix VMAX. Cost effectiveBecause Open Replicator leverages an existing Symmetrix and SAN/WAN infrastructure for the data movement, theres only a minimal software investment. THE RIGHT SOLUTION FOR THE JOB Only EMC offers a broad range of replication solutions to meet varying service levels, from mobility and migration to complete business continuity infrastructures. For applications which require the absolute highest levels of protection and availability, the EMC Symmetrix Remote Data Facility (SRDF
) family of remote replication products is
the hands-down choice in the industry, providing unprecedented levels of performance and functionality across a broad range of needs. For applications and environments where economics and infrastructure flexibility are more important than recovery-point objective (RPO) and recovery-time objective (RTO) concerns, Open Replicator offers a powerful and cost-effective alternative. With the Symmetrix, you gain the powerful advantage of being able to not only pick the right choice for your particular application, but also to blend your choice of solutions among applications, using the SRDF family for some and EMC Open Replicator for Symmetrix for others. When your needs change, your infrastructure investments are protected because the SRDF family and Open Replicator solutions can operate simultaneously on the same array and in many cases the same data volumes. Finally, they can all be managed through a common graphical user interfaceEMC Symmetrix Management Console. NON-DISRUPTIVE DATA MIGRATION Technology migrations are an essential part of the IT landscape, and storage is no exception. The most important part of a migration though is keeping applications online servicing users throughout the process. Federated Live Migration does just that, it enables organizations to perform fully non-disruptive migrations. FLM ties together the array-based migration of the data with the host-level application redirection. It does this by using a set of coordinated commands via Symmetrix Management Console to initiate the Open Replicator session and coordinate the host application redirection from one central point making the migration truly non-disruptive. FLM also supports a number of prequalified stacks of array, multipathing, and host operating systems that help eliminate time-consuming remediation processes. Non-Disruptive Migration Coordinated storage-level data migration and host re-direction for truly non-disruptive migrations ZERO SPACE RECLAIM TO GAIN BACK VALUABLE CAPACITY Open Replicator includes an innovative feature called zero space reclaim that enables orga- nizations to reclaim allocated but unwritten capacity from the donor system during a migra- tion operation. It does this by monitoring the data arriving at the new Symmetrix VMAX and only de-staging non-zeros to disk, freeing up the zero space so it can be redeployed for other uses. This greatly increases capacity utilization on the new array while reducing the storage costs typically tied to applications that were over provisioned on older storage systems. DATA DISTRIBUTION AND MOBILITY With EMC Open Replicator, organizations can distribute up to 16 copies of a single source volume to remote storage systems while having the ability to push incremental updates to each volume as needed. This makes content distribution for processes like pushing pricing updates to remote point-of-sale locations (store registers) a fast, automated, and consistent process. Each point-of-sale location will be working from the exact same data, eliminating any possibility for pricing inconsistency between retail locations. Each subsequent data refresh is incremental, significantly reducing the time and bandwidth necessary to support the process. SAN or WAN Push and pull data between local or remote arrays for test/development, updating point-of-purchase systems, or centralized backup processes ONLINE POINT-IN-TIME REPLICATION TO NON-SYMMETRIX STORAGE When faced with the dilemma of making consistent copies of multiple online data volumes and sending them to a remote system, most solutions require that you use a static copy of the data. That means either stopping I/O to the volume or creating a separate local copy. While this has advantages in terms of performance, it can be costly in terms of disk space when its not being used as part of a local business continuity strategy. EMC Open Replicator solves this problem without requiring you to keep a second local copy by allowing you to create remote consistent point-in-time images of local volumes without impacting ongoing production operations. Start: 6:00 a.m. End: 6:02 a.m. Target Image: 6:00 a.m. STD Online Point-in-Time Remote Replication I/O can continue to source volumes Incremental updates Targets can be non-Symmetrix No license or software required on the target REMOTE DATA VAULTING All organizations that make tape backups and ship them offsite for safekeeping are practicing a form of remote data vaulting. However, tape backups have several disadvantages com- pared to disk-based replication, including: RPOs and RTOs that range from 24 hours up to days; low reliability; and being subject to handling damage and loss. Additionally, most tape backups are kept locally for quick retrieval, which can make it difficult to recover to an alter- nate location hundreds or thousands of miles away. SAN or WAN STD BCV Incremental Updates Push a copy of critical data to a local or remote vault for economical data preservation with faster disk-based data access; subsequent data pushes are incremental and automated The solution to these problems is to be able to keep remote copies of your production infor- mation in a ready state, retrievable to any site that may require access to the data. Further, you must be able to update that remote copy frequently with incremental updatesyou may even need to keep copies in more than one location. And of course, you want to be able to do all of this without impacting application performance or availability and at an affordable cost. Open Replicator can maintain hundreds of unique, remote, disk-based copies that can be incrementally updated based on your specific requirements. EMC Open Replicator also enables you to distribute up to 16 copies of a source volume to remote locationsover any distancefor easy online retrieval. You can incrementally update those copies at any point after creation. These remote copies may be made while the application volumes are online, either from the source volume directly or from an EMC TimeFinder
copy of the source volume.
