Jennifer Yates Professor Rich ELD 307 April 8, 2014 Writing Assessment The purpose of the writing assessment

is to figure out what the student needs to work on in their writing. It is meant to help the teacher figure out what the student needs to grow at in order to become a better writer. The students writing that I chose to look at is Ani, he is in Miss Belmontes third grade class at Wifcoff Elementary School, in West Windsor- Plainsboro, New Jersey. The methodology that I used to assess Anis writing was the questions that were provided by Professor Rich on Canvas. When looking at the students writing I n oticed that the handwriting is messy. I also notice that though punctuation is used, it is used sparingly. I also noticed that the writing is multi-paged and that there is dialogue throughout the piece. There is also places where sound words are used. From my perspective the assignment was to write a realistic fiction story. In my opinion the students strengths are that the story is easily followed and the writer was able to convey the story they wanted, without over using dialogue. The students needs are that in some places the student does not use a word in the correct manner. Another need that the student has is that he needs to work on is his punctuation, in parts of his writing it is missing. Finally a need that the student has is that he need to focus on one thought and see it through before moving on to the next. Before the student finished his thought about explaining the Rainbow Patrol, he interrupted them himself to include the drama of the story. In the students perspective they were working to

include upper level vocabulary words into his story to try to enhance his writing, as well as to include a plot. My implications for instruction are that I would start with teaching the student the correct use of different vocabulary words. I would then move on to teaching him use of punctuation, and then to teaching him how to make his ideas concise. This will help the student have a better understanding of the elements of a story and in the long run will help him write better stories. My lesson plan for this student will focus on using the correct usage of vocabulary words.

Individualized Lesson Plan Subject Topic: Vocabulary Rationale: To teach the student to use the correct definition of vocabulary words so that the student can use it correctly in their writing. Standards: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.3.4 Determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning word and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. Objective: The student will be able to use the correct definition of the higher level vocabulary words, and the student will be able to apply it to their writing. Materials: Dictionary, chart paper, markers. Procedures: Engagement/ Anticipatory Set: Ask the student if he enjoys learning new words and applying them to his writing. Then ask the student if they would like to learn some new words. Mentor: Teach and Model: Using a word that the student already knows, and has used, like the word appropriate, and write the word at the top of the chart paper. Then using the dictionary write the different definitions that apply to the word. Once it is established that the word has different meanings, one when it is used as an adjective and a different one when used as a verb. Then demonstrate how the word can be used in the different ways by creating a sentence for each definition of the word. Show how if the word is used in a sentence where the definition does not

make sense, a different word is needed. Ask the student if there are any other words that are giving them trouble and if they would like to go over them as well. Guided Practice: On a clean piece of chart paper put a vocabulary word at the top, such as Depressed, ask the student to use the dictionary to write the definitions on the chart paper under the word. Once he is finished ask him to come up with a sentence that uses the word in it for each definition of the word. Independent Application: Ask the student use the words that we have gone over in their writing for the day, and ask them to use it in the words correctly. Closure: Ask the student if they have a better understanding of how to tell which definition would apply for the word and how to use the word correctly in a sentence. Assessment: Have the student write a story using higher level vocabulary words, making sure that the words are used correctly and with the correct definition.
