Lesson Plan #1 Book: The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart Written by: Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton Illustrated by: Christine Davenier Rationale: My overall purpose of this lesson is to share a story that incorporates the holiday of Valentines Day with my students. Also I want to help express my personality and love for imagination to my students. They should see through the read aloud that everyone is unique in their own way. They will understand what unique is and how we all are in our own way. They will then be able to create their own special Valentines Day cards for their classmates. My goal is for the students to recognize a persons uniqueness (their classmates) and configure on paper and orally. By the examples in the book and by my own modeling I hope my students will have fun and learn how to articulate their feelings on a loving holiday. Standards: R1.1.7: Use the illustrations and details in a text to describe its key ideas. R1.1.4: Ask and answer questions to help determine or clarify the meaning of words and phrases in a text. W.1.2: Write informative/explanatory texts in which they name a topic, supply some facts about the topic, and provide some sense of closure. Objectives: SWBAT understand what being unique is through the main character in the story and by her explanation of her own classmates uniqueness. SWBAT express on paper (with guides) why they love/appreciate other classmates like how Gerry did when talking about her Valentines Day cards. SWBAT orally express their feelings to their classmates while using the paper as a guide if needed. SWBAT understand how to listen to a read aloud and then incorporate what they saw/heard in the book and establish the connection through their own Valentine card making/oral explanation about their classmates. Procedure: Ok boys and girls today we will be reading a book so in a second when you all are quite I am going to call each table to the carpet and when each table is called please grab your reading mats and go to your assigned place on the carpet.

I need table 1 to quietly walk over to get their mat and head to the carpetI now need table 2 to walk over to get their mat and sit on the carpet and finally I need table three to walk over and get their mat and head to the carpet to their assigned spots. After everyone is settled I will hold up book. Would anyone like to make any predictions on what this book may be about?... Great predictions! This book is called The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart and Written by: Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton and Illustrated by: Christine Davenier. Page 3 Have any of you made a Valentine for anyone before like Gerry is? Page 8 Did anyone notice, why Gerry covered her Moms Valentine with flowers? Thats a very unique trait Gerrys mom has. Page 10 Can I get a thumbs up if you agree with Gerry that Valentines Day is once a year? Page 12 Can I get another thumbs up if anyone has ever left the house and had to go back because they forgot something like Gerry almost did? Page 14 I love how Miss. Pym has hung up all those hearts in her classroomthats such a neat idea!! Page 19 Would anyone like to make a prediction of how Gerry is going to give her classmates a different kind of Valentines? Page 21 Wow, did anyone predict correctly? I think Gerry really made Delilah happy when she told her what makes her unique! Page 25 See Gerry couldnt really think of something to tell Connor how she thinks he is unique but as the author said she was able to think of something pretty quickly which means in a short amount of timea pinch Page 29 Wow, Connor was very nice for appreciating Gerry for telling everyone how unique they are even without the Valentines she made for her classmates. That is very brave of her! Do you think any of you could do what Gerry did? At the end of the book I will ask, Now after reading this book about Gerry and her Valentines Day, does anyone know what unique is? Are we all unique? Does anyone know how Gerry expressed to her classmates how they were all unique? Based off the story we just read how can we show others our appreciation for their uniqueness? I will model with my teacher talk what an example of a Valentine can consist of by using students as examples. I think Julia us unique because she is awesome at tennis and always helpful. I also think that pat is unique because he loves trucks and always makes me laugh with his jokes. Do any of you think you could be brave like Gerry and express how you think your classmates are unique? Define Unique if still dont understand!! Because right now we are going to take some time and make our own special Valentines for our classmates! So please quietly go and bring your mats back to the bin, table three please do so and then head back to your seats. . .and then table one. . . and finally table two. 2

First I will hand out slips of the assigned classmates name to the students. I will have an example written on the board of how they should be writing their sentences. HAND OUT SUPPLIES explain why each piece of the materials is needed and what they should do with them to help create the final product. Where I will have one for them to see! After each of you comes up with your sentence of how your classmate is unique you will all be individually sharing up front to the class the Valentine you have madejust like how Gerry did in the book. But you will all have the guide of the written Valentine you have made to read off of. I think each one of you is unique in your own way and I am excited to see what you all share about your classmates! LET US ALL GET STARTED WITH THE ACTIVITY! Will differentiate if needed for students who I think need some assistance. At the end of the craft and oral presentations I will have them all leave the Valentines with me so I can hang them up like Miss. Pym did in her classroom in the book! So tomorrow during Valentines Day you can all see how you think your classmates are unique in their own ways.

Materials: The Very Fairy Princess Follows Her Heart Written by: Julie Andrews and Emma Walton Hamilton Illustrated by: Christine Davenier The worksheet (white which can be cut out by the students) Scrap paper for brainstorming Red and Pink construction paper (for the back of the hearts) I will already have these cut out so when done cutting the white sheet they can just glue it to the larger sized hearts. Glue Scissors Colored pencils for them to write their message or colored markers. (Thats why the scrap paper is needed for them to write the sentence on before writing on the actual worksheet/white heart). Also they need to be ready with their voices to read the Valentines.

Activity: The white worksheet will all be given to the students but I will already have a shape of a heart drawn on with space inside the heart that reads: From: ______. I think _______ is unique because___________________________ ________________________ ____________________ 3

After I am finished with the book am ready for the activity I will ask the students to quietly go back to their desks and I will hand them all one slip of (pre made) papers that will have one of their classmates names on it. (I may specifically give certain people distinct people that I think could benefit for them to get based on certain needs of my students. This will also eliminate them from choosing who they want to write about and maybe potentially saving feelings being hurt if someone doesnt get chosen to be written about.) I am hoping to do this activity and lesson the day before Valentines Day so they can understand the meaning of writing Valentines. Also, so I can potentially hang these up for the day of Valentines Day so the room can be filled by all the kind words they have already written about one another. After they all have finished writing their Valentines and making them look beautiful I will then have them all quickly come up to the front of the class and have them recite what they wrote about their one classmate. Assessments: I will assess by the students participation to think of these sentences for their classmates and when asked questions throughout the book being read. I will observe to see how they have written the Valentine (was it hard to think of/did they need assistance). The main assessment is to see the completed Valentines Day card and how they orally read the card to the class. I would also love to have them hung up somewhere in classroom so we can all see their work and reflect back on when needed. Differentiation: I will accommodate and modify based off my students needs. Especially with those who may have IEPs. For those who may struggle with coming up with words to describe their classmates uniqueness I could give them a sheet of paper of some examples to help spark their creativity. For others I could sit one on one to try and help if I dont have another teacher to assist. I could also allow 4

some students if I see they are stuck to work together to help brainstorm with one another. If a student has a particular need to receive help while reading aloud their sentence I could say a part of the sentence out loud and then they have to try and repeat me and just continue that till the end and then try and get them to say it at once. If a student wants to use a word to describe a classmate and doesnt know how to spell it they can write how they think it is spelled on their individual word chart and then I can write the correct spelling on the chart for them. (This chart is kept in their file to see what words they are trying to spell and how I can see how they are thinking words are spelled to see patterns. I have time set aside for them all to work on their individual charts at a later time). Future Connections: From this lesson I hope to be able to help my students become more fluent with their speech. I also hope this lesson and activity can bring my students closer as a community of learners and friends. Also, that it will assist my students with reasoning and how to brainstorm their thoughts and then articulate them into their writing of the activity. I hope to spark my students minds so that later down the road at home or when discussing different topics they will be more comfortable with speaking in front of their peers and strengthen their self confidence. They will also be able to connect with the word unique and when asked of them in later lessons what they remember about uniqueness.
