McRaes Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Reading Made Fun for Kids

Grade Level/Subject Area: First Grade Reading

State or National Standards: ELACC1RF1, ELACC1RF4

Essential Questions: How can learning to read and speak effectively help a student achieve in life? What is fluency and why is it important?

Lesson Questions: How can recognizing the features of a sentence such as capitalization and punctuation help students in the reading process? How important are capitalization and punctuation marks in a sentence?

Goal/Objective: After completing all tasks, students will be able to read fluently and with accuracy. Students will also understand how to structure sentences properly by understanding capitalization and end punctuation.

Materials Needed: Smart Board, Markers/Highlighters, Worksheets on Punctuation, Index Cards.

Size of Group: Large and small groups

Procedures: Students will copy two sentences from the board daily. The sentence will be

written incorrectly. Students will correct the sentence and the entire class will discuss the sentences during instructional time. Another portion of the class, students will receive handouts and use their highlighters to highlight all alphabets that should be capitalized and use a marker to mark the appropriate punctuation. During reading, students will be given or assigned a book. The teacher will discuss reading behaviors such as phrasing, rate, and intonation. The students will practice their texts several times until fluency has developed. Students will also listen to stories on CDs as they follow along in their books. To help build their word knowledge, students will be given index cards with their sight words. Each day, during small group time, students will have five words presented to them. The students will learn to read each sight word fluently and with accuracy. The student will also use the word in a sentence to show their knowledge and understanding of the word.

Discussion of Key Points, Discoveries, and Conclusion: The entire class will discuss how important it is to learn to read effectively and how understanding text plays a major role in developing their reading skills. We will further discuss the importance of beginning every sentence with a capital letter and ending it with the appropriate punctutation mark. Students will also realize different types of sentences have different types of end punctuation marks. Using some of the sight words, students will form various sentences, and use the appropriate punctuation at the end.

Evaluation: As students are doing their assigned tasks, I will observe to see who may need further assistance. I will also note children who are performing all the tasks instructed for the day.
